Knit caps and galoshes replaced bonnets and shiny shoes at Lampe Park on Sunday.

More than an inch of sticky wet snow covered the lawn at the Gardnerville park for the annual Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club Easter Egg Hunt.

“There was obviously that concern with the weather,” Club member Cody Burkhauser said. “But come rain or shine … or snow the kids will definitely be here and we’re always happy to put this on for the community.”

But the 6,000 brightly colored plastic eggs were easy to hide and even easier to locate in the snow.

Burkhauser said 500 of the eggs were donated by Northwest Martial Arts. In addition to the candy in those eggs was a coupon for a free lesson at the dojo to work off the carbs.

A rarer find were the six golden eggs which children could exchange for a basket containing a prize.

Burkhauser said the weather didn’t slow down the turnout, which he estimated was similar to last year’s 200 or so children.

Once the signal was given on Sunday morning, tiny boots churned up the snow as egg hunters filled their baskets.

Easter’s just the start of the busy season for the 20-30 Club, who will be out helping May 17-19 with Douglas County Center for Home and Healing’s Hot Air for Hope.

Then the club’s largest undertaking of the year, Carson Valley Days, is June 6-9.
