The March 26, 2024, R-C Morning Report

Topaz Ranch Estates photographer John Flaherty used a little digital magic to make the traffic cones pop in this photo of Main Street in Gardnerville. Once the trenching is done, I expect work will finally begin on repaving.

Genoa, Nev. — Sunday’s outage was a lot more extensive than I originally reported. I don’t know what happened to knock that East Valley power line down at 1:30 p.m. There was a 30 mph gust recorded at the airport around the same time, which might have lofted something into the power line. Electricity wasn’t restored to most customers for nine hours.

Douglas County starts four days of budget discussions 10 a.m. today. They are usually done in three days, but the fourth is for safety. With the Legislature out of sessions I’m hoping there aren’t too many surprises.

The Library Board of Trustees is tackling the tentative budget as well today. Nevada requires all local governments to be done with budgeting by mid-April, so that’s why all this happens at the same time. They meet 10 a.m. today at the Minden Branch of the Douglas County Public Library.

The Min-Gard Chapter 2167 of the Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees meets 2 p.m. today at United Methodist Church 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville. Information, leave a message for John Palen at 775-265-9500.

I listened to the drought webinar on Monday and the news is pretty good. They use normal in these things instead of average, which I’ve been changing for 30 years. My story in Wednesday’s edition not only uses “normal” but leans into it.

We’ve had a pretty warm winter this year and the drought folks are a tad concerned that the lows have been higher than average, which was true for Minden in February and March. That’s going to be a concern when the melt-off hits.

A winter weather advisory takes effect above 7,000 feet in the Carson Range and Lake Tahoe starting 2 p.m. Wednesday. Kingsbury might be a little sketchy for the Thursday morning commute.

Today is forecast to be sunny and 55 degrees with the wind shifting to the northwest at 5-10 mph in the morning. Temperatures are supposed to drop below freezing tonight, but that’s what they were supposed to do last night, too.
