A Washoe County man was sentenced to consecutive 18-year prison terms after admitting to two counts of attempted sexual assault.

Andrew David Dunn, 41, entered pleas to revised charges on Tuesday that carried the same maximum sentences.

Dunn previously admitted supplying a 14-year-old girl with alcohol before sexually assaulting her on the ride home on Aug. 26, 2022.

Attorney Mary Brown argued that Dunn should receive probation after a psycho-sexual evaluation found that he was at below average risk to reoffend.

She asked the judge to sentence him as a whole man “and not for the worst day of his life.”

Prosecutor Chelsea Mazza said it was the 14-year-old girl whose life was changed forever that day when she was sexually assaulted by Dunn.

According to court documents, Dunn was at a softball game where he routinely bought beer for the team. The girl said he encouraged her to drink alcohol before taking her home. The first charge was for a sex act that occurred while he was driving, before he stopped the car at a park and assaulted her.

Mazza said Dunn told an evaluator the girl was flirting with him.

In a written victim impact statement, the girl’s mother asked the judge to sentence Dunn to the maximum. She said her daughter is suffering from anxiety, low self-esteem and depression and was in counseling.

Brown submitted letters from family members and his employer that said the crime was out of character for him. District Judge Tod Young read an excerpt from a letter written by Dunn’s aunt saying she would never believe he’d done what he’d admitted in court.

Young pointed out that what the letters revealed was that Dunn hadn’t been honest with his family about what he’d admitted in court.

“The facts of the crime are bad enough,” Young said. “But it appears he provided a child with alcohol with the intention of grooming her.”

Young sentenced Dunn to a total of 36 years with parole eligibility after 14.4 years.

Dunn was remanded to custody and his bail exonerated.
