Genoa, Nev. — A discussion on future improvements to Gardnerville Station go before members of the Town Board 4:30 p.m. today. With the completion of the state’s portion of the work, the town is clear to pave the parking lot and complete work on a design presented a decade ago for the spot in the S Curve.

A celebration of life is 11 a.m. Sunday at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center in Gardnerville for Airport Advisory Committee member and Johnson Lane resident A.J. Ursic, who died March 22.

Parks & Recreation advisors will talk about the budget and the parks plan at their meeting 6 p.m. today at the Community Center. For an overview, check out Friday’s budget hearing online presented by Community Services Director Brook Adie.

Taxable sales were up 4 percent in January to open the second half of the fiscal year. The county’s 6,087 merchants reported $82.1 million in sales, up from $79 million in January 2023. A lot of that was from nonstore retailers, like Amazon, that posted $12.6 million in taxable sales, a whopping 57.2 percent increase over last year.

For a condition referred to as “normal” by hydrologists, it’s actually pretty rare, according to the Natural Resource Conservation Service’s Jeff Anderson. “In the last 44 years, we have only seen 12 years with a snowpack 80-120 percent of normal peak.”

This is the only year since 1981 when the snowpack in the Carson River Basin has managed to climb from the 7th lowest median on Jan. 1 to a normal peak by April 1.

So, winter’s finally over and we can start barbecuing and wearing shorts outside, right? Nope! A cold front is forecast to arrive in Western Nevada late Wednesday through Thursday with a chance of snow showers and daytime temperatures 15-20 degrees below normal on Thursday and Friday, with hard freezes overnight.

So, cherish the sun and high temperature of 66 degrees today. A light breeze is predicted to pick up out of the west at 5 mph. Tonight’s low is expected to drop to 36. We get one more day of highs in the 60s on Wednesday, allegedly.
