The Tiger volleyball team swept Galena on Senior Night on Tuesday in Minden – 26-24, 25-23, 25-9.
Senior Suzy Berger led the attack with 12 kills, helping to secure Douglas’ second win in a row.
“It’s pretty natural and it comes with a lot of work,” said Berger of her ability to find kills at the net. “I just wanted to win.”
Kiyara Clark posted 10 kills for Douglas while fellow sophomore Makinzy Machado had seven kills.
The assists came from three places as Ella Girdner had 16, Priya KC tallied nine and senior Megan Kelly recorded five.
Emersyn Worthington had a team-high 13 digs.
The Tigers, already battling injuries, potentially lost another player to an ankle injury but the win gives the Tigers a one-game lead on the final playoff spot over the Grizzlies.
“I think we’ve been doing better and we’ve been growing a lot as a team,” said Berger. “My biggest thing is I’ve learned to lead by example. If I’m ever upset I try really hard to not let it show.”
Following the season, the Tigers will graduate four seniors in Berger, Kelly, Sarah Flynt and Shasta Garr.
UP NEXT: Douglas (17-14, 4-9 in Class 5A North) will finish the season at home next week with matchups against Damonte Ranch on Tuesday and Carson on Wednesday.
Zinke 3rd, Douglas girls golf 2nd at state
They won’t be hanging another banner this fall, but the Douglas girls golf team proved it was more than capable of being successful after being moved up to Class 4A this season.
After qualifying for state as a team, Douglas put together a 705 team score, finishing behind Bishop Manogue (615) at the state tournament.
The two-day event took place in Las Vegas and finished at the Aliante Golf Club after being held at The Club at Sunrise for day one.
Douglas junior Giana Zink had a remarkable second day, bouncing back from an 88 to shoot a 67 for a two-day score of 155.
She took third and finished 11 strokes off the pace of leader Ella Rawson 75-69–144.
Madison Frisby and Logan Karwoski joined Zinke with a phenomenal second day of play.
Frisby took 10th overall with a 90-81–171 while Karwoski was 11th with a 95-77–172.
Kailynn Dollar and Adrianna Nuno entered the clubhouse with scores of 207 and 230, respectively.
Roberts, McGee end season at state golf
Carson High girls golf sent two individuals to the Class 4A state tournament this week.
Senior Madeline Roberts was 12th overall with a two-day score of 94-80–174. Fellow senior Jamie McGee put together a 99-89–188 to take 19th.
The two seniors finish their high school careers as three-time state qualifiers.
Tiger girls soccer downs Carson
For the second time this season, Douglas High girls soccer beat Carson, this time by a 3-1 margin.
Kaylee Bradford had a pair of goals for the Tigers while Katelyn Coons tallied the other goal.
The loss eliminates the Senators from postseason contention.
“First of all, it’s against Carson and the rivalry is just so much fun,” said Douglas senior Aleeah Weaver. “We’ve had a rough start to the season and it’s kind of nice to know we are in lock.”
Weaver added the Tigers will be the underdogs going into the postseason this year after several years of being one of the top teams.
“I know we are going to push through and start the playoffs off right,” said Weaver. “They’ve all been close games and I think anybody can beat anybody at this point.”
UP NEXT: Douglas will travel to Bishop Manogue today for a 10:45 a.m. kickoff and finish the regular season at home against McQueen (Tuesday) and Damonte Ranch (Oct. 28).
Carson will also return home to end the season against Galena (Tuesday) and Bishop Manogue (Thursday).

Douglas tennis wraps up season
The Tiger tennis team had two singles players and a doubles team alive in the Class 4A North regional tournaments, but all fell Wednesday.
For the boys, singles players Kolten Brown and Bennett Schoenmann made it to the quarterfinals of the regional singles tournament.
Brown entered as the No. 3 seed and won his first match 6-2, 6-0 after an opening round bye.
However sixth-seeded Josh Boyden of Reno took out Brown in the quarters, 6-2, 6-0.
On the other side of the bracket, Schoenmann earned the No. 8 seed and also won his first match 6-3, 6-0 after a first round bye.
His quarterfinal match came against the top seed in the tournament, Ryder Kiel of Bishop Manogue, who defeated Schoenmann 6-1, 6-1.
On the girls side, Ava Gildea and Alexis Hyde were also the eight seed in the doubles bracket.
The pair won their first match 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 before falling to the No. 1 seed from Reno, Alexandra Fulton and Sawyer King, 6-2, 6-0.
Sierra Lutheran girls golf third at state
The Falcon girls golf team put together a third place finish at the Class 2A state tournament held at Toiyabe Golf Club on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Sierra Lutheran ended the tournament with a team score of 1,106, behind White Pine (1,097) and North Tahoe (789).
Individually, the Falcons were led by Cailyn Schroder, who shot a 132-130–262, good for 17th overall.
Dakota Reed and Rezsia Berger were 19th and 20th, respectively, with scores of 274 and 276.
Tristin Langemeier put together a 297 to take 27th while Katie Rybicki was 31st with a 300.
Clare Rybicki shot a 334 to round out the Falcons’ golfers.
