Moody breaks school record as Tiger track dominates home meet

In the regular season finale, the Douglas high boys and girls track and field teams both put on shows that will certainly make next weekend’s regional meet for dramatic.

On the girls side, Douglas won the team portion of the meet with 130 points, beating out second place Reno (115).

Bliss Moody etched her name into the Tiger record book yet again, setting a school record in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 10 inches.

It bested the previous school record by two inches.

The Tiger coaching staff was praising Moody’s efforts all afternoon long.

The sophomore was second in the 200-meter dash in 26.22, a personal record.

Moody was also on the 4x100 relay team, alongside Kaylee Bradford, Grace Strabala and Elizabeth Gneiting that took second place.

She wasn’t done there, as the sophomore was a second place finisher in the high jump, clearing 5-2.

Ava Coons was third in the high jump after clearing five feet while adding team points in multiple other events.

Coons went on to finish second in the 100-meter hurdles with a PR time of 17.01 and took seventh in the 300-meter hurdles.

Strabala, a freshman, was third in the 100m dash in 13.19 before taking fifth in the 200.

Katelyn Coons was third in the 300m hurdles in 48.99 and seventh in the 100m hurdles in 17.72, setting PR’s in both events.

Sophie Marchut won the discus throw with a 97-11 while Megan Strand was third with a mark of 95-9.

Marchut and Strand finished third and fourth in the shot put for the Tigers.

The Tiger boys took second as a team with 101 points, finishing only behind Spring Creek.

Joshua Nelson PR’d in the 100m dash in 11.41 to take second place overall. Nelson was third in the 200 behind teammate AJ Thurston (22.66), with another PR of 22.96.

Jackson Davis clocked in at 2:08.37 in the 800 meters, taking third. He was fourth in the 1,600 in 4:38.77.

Dylan Spear-Holub put together a 43.20 to PR in the 300m hurdles and finished second. He was timed at a 16.61 in the 110-meter hurdles to take fourth.

Mateo Esquivel, Nelson, Connor Jackson and Thurston won the 4x100 relay in 43.72.

Jackson, Nelson, Thurston and Kevin O’Connell punched the clock in the 4x200 in 1:30.91 to win the event.

Douglas also won the 4x4 relay and took third in the 4x800.

Rock Gignac was fifth in the long jump with a season-best mark of 19-6.75.

Connor Jackson finished just behind him with a leap of 19-3.

Gignac put together a final mark of 37-5.5 in the triple jump to finish fifth.

Douglas softball double bagels Galena

With back-to-back shutouts Saturday, Douglas High softball prevented the Galena Grizzlies from scoring a run in 17-0 and 15-0 wins.

Zora Simpson was a menace at the plate, going 4-for-6 in the two-game series with three home runs and five RBIs.

Annie Hill was 3-for-4 in the 15-0 win and had a double with two RBIs.

Haley Wilkinson and Talia Tretton homered in both games while Lilyann Lee, Bre Williams and Cam McClelland were all able to take a free trip around the bases after hitting it over the fence.

In game one, Tretton tossed a no-hitter in the circle, fanning 11 Grizzly hitters over six innings of work. A walk was her only blemish on the day.

Mackenzie Willis allowed just one hit in three innings of work in game two while punching out seven more hitters.

The wins are Douglas’ 14^th and 15^th victories in a row and leave the Tigers in full control of the No. 1 seed in the North, going into the final week of the regular season.

Tiger baseball falls on Little League day

Douglas High welcomed the second toughest team in the Class 5A North for Little League day this past Saturday, falling to Bishop Manogue 11-1 in five innings.

The Tigers didn’t get on the board until the fifth inning when Sean Lemming advanced to first on a dropped third strike, allowing Keegan Snooks to come in and score after he led off the inning with a single.

Jacob Davis was 2-for-2 in the loss for Douglas and Thomas Young also added a hit from the leadoff spot.

Douglas holds an 11-13 overall record and a 6-8 clip in league play.

With two more games on the league docket before regionals, the Tigers could potentially jump into the five seed or fall as low as the seven seed for regional play.
