Valley hosts tributes to internal combustion engine

A record 102 “in-liners” turned up for the 18th annual Rappin’ to Minden car show on Saturday.

Northern Nevada Inliners Chapter President Al Jewell said he’d hoped for 60 cars, but 101 had arrived and the owner of the 102nd was headed up to the gazebo to register.

The car show’s is named for the rapping sound of an inline engine, organizers said.

Northern Nevada Inliners is one of 30 Chapters worldwide, dedicated to the preservation of vintage vehicles, powered by inline 4-, 6-, and 8-cylinder engines.

Organizer Vicki Jewell said the group met Friday night at the Douglas County Community and Senior Center, where inliners from chapters in the Bay Area, Northern California and Central California and Idaho were represented.

The winner for the rappingest engine was Frank Hinmon with his modified 1927 Buick.

“It has a ’53 straight 8 out of a 1953 Buick,” Vicki said. “The front fender and grill are the only thing that is original. Everything else was fabricated by Frank.”

The 50/50 raffle winner was John Breylinger, who won $434 — a record amount of tickets sales for the club, Vicki said.

The chapter had its banquet at Jackpot Crossing Casino, which was catered by A Catered Affair.

“We have already reserved Minden Park for 2024,” she said. “This show is always the first Saturday in June.”

But the classic vehicles just kept coming filling every space along Esmeralda Avenue and down Fifth Street in the Douglas County seat.

The car show’s is named for the rapping sound of an inline engine, organizers said.

There is even a contest where owners fire up their vehicles and compare for the rappingest engine. The winner receives a trophy made of engine parts.

Across Carson Valley, the Northern Nevada’s Early Day Gas Engine & Tractor Club will continue its 25th anniversary Antique Engine and Tractor Show 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Douglas County Nevada Fairgrounds.

The event includes a tractor pull contest, displays of antique tractors, gas engines, vintage cars, trucks and machinery as well as a silent auction and raffle for a 1965 Case 440 tractor.

Other attractions include a swap meet, food vendors, antique and tractor memorabilia vendors and much more.

The entry fee is $10 for adults. Children under 12 years of age are free.
