Next week marks 50 years since the movie “American Graffiti” premiered and the Aug. 3 Hot August Nights Poker Run in Minden.

Hot August Nights will be hitting the Comstock this weekend before heading down to Reno next week.

With room for 5,500 classic vehicles, the 36th event, Reno is a big draw for fans across the region.

Gardnerville residents got a preview on Saturday as part of the 9th annual “Send a Scout to Camp Car Show” hosted by the Northern Nevada Inliners was Saturday at Lampe Park.

Saturday’s car show even had an award named after the big car show with James and Gloria Hutcherson winning the Hot August Nights Best in Show and older with their 1950 Chevrolet Model 3100 pickup.

“Though the temperatures were a bit warm, some would say hot, the turnout was quite good,” organizer Vicki Jewell said of Saturday’s event

In addition to 128 cars and trucks, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office showed up with the MRAP and there was a semi-truck entered in the show.

This was the first year the show, which is a Hot August Nights Event Series Promoter, has been conducted in Gardnerville.

The reason for the car show is right in the name.

“We thank everyone who supported this event as all profits do go to local scouting,” Jewell said. “Troop 495 sold coffee and donuts as well as bottled water.  They had an opportunity to engage with the participants.”

“Thank you to our trophy sponsors Data Graphics, Double J Auto, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Dura-Bond, Kim’s Donuts and Teahouse, Elite Finish, Kustom Kreations, Reno Carson Lumber, Rubert’s Auto Body, The Chop Shop Hair Garage, Tractor Supply Co., and T’s in Motion,” organizer Vicki Jewell said.

Several businesses provided auction items for the live auction, including 88 Cups and More, Carson Valley Golf Club, Dura-Bond, Elite Finish, Especially for You, Fuentes Mexican Restaurant, JJ’s Mexican Food, Knits and Knots Yarn and Supplies, Leah’s Perfect Rose, Red’s Old 395 Grill, Schat’s Bakery, Wink’s Silver Strike Lanes, and Woodett’s Diner.

Vendors included Elite Finish (vehicle detailing), John’s Redwood, Pat’s Toys, Pammie’s Crafts, Linda’s Crafts, Castro’s Collectibles, Apron Strings and More, Community 4 Vets, Pro-Lift (garage door services).  Food vendors were Nevada Nosh, Tahoe Canning Co., Kona Ice, and Panchos Tacos.
