Douglas High girls basketball (9-9 overall) got off to the races early against Reed High School (9-9) Tuesday night.
The Tigers, who scored 21 points in the opening quarter, jumped out to a double-digit lead en route to winning 58-36.
Zora Simpson had seven points in the opening quarter, posting 15 points total and hitting four triples in the win.
Talia Tretton and Aleeah Weaver were equally deadly and, at times, were able to plat a nice two-man game to keep the Raider defense off guard.
The duo combined for a bucket to beat the buzzer at the end of the first quarter as Weaver found Tretton underneath the basket for a layup as time expired.
Tretton had 11 points while Weaver finished with 10.
At the 4:04 mark of the first quarter, Reed’s assistant coach was given two technical on the bench and ejected for arguing with officials.
The double technical resulted in four free throws for the Tigers, who grabbed a 12-2 lead Weaver hit two from the charity stripe and then drove to the rim for a basket on Douglas’ next possession.
Over the second and third quarters combined, Douglas’ defense allowed Reed to score a total of 13 points.
“I thought it was the defensive pressure that we gave them that really gave them fits,” said Douglas head coach Jason Carter. “The girls did a really good job on the boards. Then getting in those passing lanes, … just trying to be stifling.”
Logan Karwoski had eight points for the Tigers
“I thought it was a great team win from top to bottom,” said Carter. “Logan and Talia did a really nice job on the inside.”
Friday night, Douglas fell to McQueen, 30-26.
Douglas is now 7-5 in Class 5A North league play and sits tied for third place as of Friday evening with McQueen and Spanish Springs in the league standings.
