The Feb. 24, 2023, R-C Storming Report

The Douglas High School boys basketball team boarded a bus bound for Las Vegas and the NIAA State Championships on Thursday morning. One week after finishing as the runner-up in the Northern 5A regional tournament, Douglas (17-11) opens the 5A state tournament on Friday against Southern champion Durango (19-6) at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas. The winner of that game will play for the state championship on Saturday at the Thomas & Mack Center. For coverage of Friday night’s game, go to recordcourier.com.

Genoa, Nev. — Highway 88 is closed at Kirkwood and Interstate 80 is closed from the state line to Colfax due to zero visibility, according to roads.dot.ca.gov Highway 50 is open with chains required for all vehicles except four-wheel drive with snow tires.

Snow is falling on Kingsbury Grade and appears to be drifting over the highway, which could pose a challenge for commuters this morning. Expect slick conditions over the mountain as the winter weather advisory continues through Saturday morning.

Chains are being required both on the Grade and Highway 50 unless you have four-wheel drive with snow tires. Even if you’re prepared, it might be better to delay if you can. Just because you’re ready doesn’t mean the other guy is. Check at nvroads.com for info.

Chains or snow tires are required on Highway 395 from Carson to Minden, though the traffic camera shows the intersection with Airport Road fairly clear. That’s likely to change. Flurries are visible on the camera on 395 at Double Spring Flat. The first snow started falling in Genoa around 5:40 a.m.

The county issued a rare warning urging people to prepare for the storm on Thursday. The University of Nevada, Reno, has delayed opening for two hours. I expect Western Nevada College may follow suit. As of 5:30 a.m. there’s no word from the state.

Not to be that guy, but Saturday’s edition may have a bit of difficulty making it back over the Sierra from the printer. We’ll get done early this morning, but don’t be surprised if there’s a big note on the website in the morning.

Today’s forecast calls for 3-5 inches of snow falling after 7 a.m. today with the high temperature right around 32 degrees. The Weather Service is going all in on this snow forecast.
