After beating Bishop Manogue by five earlier in the week, Douglas High girls basketball capped arguably its best week of the season with a 48-47 win over Spanish Springs on Friday in Minden.

The Cougars had a chance to tie or win it at the free throw line with 1.4 seconds remaining, but were not able to capitalize on a one-and-one free throw opportunity, missing the first shot.

What impressed Douglas coach Jason Carter the most was the Tigers’ defense down the stretch, limiting the Cougars to six points in the final quarter.

“We got out of man and started playing a matchup 2-3,” said Carter of the late-game defense. “What I like about it is we can play multiple defenses. … We try to do some things a little differently on our pick and roll defense. It was just a great team win.”

Aleeah Weaver, who dropped 32 points against Bishop Manogue, led the team Friday with 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Ashlyn Greenfield added nine points, two rebounds and two steals.

“They’re supporting each other and they’re working hard,” said Carter. “We are in a position where we control our own destiny now. We don’t have to rely on anybody else.”

Logan Karwoski had eight points and seven rebounds while senior Addy Doerr posted six points and five boards.

UP NEXT: Douglas (11-10, 9-5 in Class 5A league play) will end the regular season with games against Galena (6-18, 2-12) and Carson (1-16, 0-14).

Spanish Springs outlasts Douglas boys

After an intense half defensively to open the game, Douglas and Spanish Springs boys basketball were tied at 19 at halftime.

However, in the second half the Cougars were able to take advantage of a couple of Tiger mistakes and go nearly perfect from the charity stripe to win, 50-43.

Tied 26-all, Spanish Springs closed the third quarter with back-to-back triples, including one to beat the buzzer.

Cougar sophomore guard Conner Sheets ended the night with 26 points after going 12-of-12 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

The inability to finish around the hoop cost the Tigers on Friday.

“They put us in that panic mode. When it came down to the end they executed at the free throw line,” said Douglas High coach Corey Thacker. “We just have to execute. I don’t think we executed very well today.”

The Cougars also did a good job of slowing the game and taking long, well-crafted possessions on the offensive end of the floor.

UP NEXT: Douglas (13-10, 9-5) sits alone in fourth place in the Class 5A North with two league games to go. The Tigers traveled to Galena (7-16, 2-12) Tuesday before hosting Carson High (5-16, 2-12) Friday to end the regular season.
