Genoa, Nev. — Today is National Voter Registration Day. Sample ballots are available at govotedouglas.com. Early voting doesn’t start until October, but machines will be available at both the Community Center in Gardnerville and the historic courthouse in Minden.

There’s a lot of information on the elections in those sample ballots, so it would be worth taking a peek at over the rest of the month to see what’s on the menu for the November General Election. The Town Hall Forum hosted by the Carson Valley and Tahoe chambers, the Business Council and The R-C is Oct. 11.

I sent out letters to candidates on Sept. 9 for The R-C’s General Election Guide. If you’re in Douglas County and haven’t heard from me about it, drop me a line at the email below and I’ll send you something.

A backyard burn reported as a structure fire around 2:10 p.m. generated a big response from East Fork firefighters and a little excitement in the neighborhood near where the Genoa Cemetery Fire occurred in June.

Backyard burning generally doesn’t open in East Fork until around the third week of October. The current moisture may result in that moving up a bit, but it certainly isn’t open now.

The rain drew blackjack a mile north of Nevada’s oldest town over the last 24 hours with roughly .21 inches of rain. Gauges on the west side of the Valley ranged from .09 inches near Fredericksburg to .06 inches at Minden-Tahoe Airport. Slightly more than a half-inch of rain fell in Skyland at Lake Tahoe in the last 24 hours.

Expect scattered showers this morning and then showers and perhaps even a thunderstorm after lunch. The high today will top out at 64 degrees. Tonight’s low is forecast to drop to 41 degrees in Minden.
