Two people were killed in separate southern Douglas County mishaps within 15 hours of one another over the Mother's Day weekend.

A man was killed early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 395 near Spring Valley Drive in the Pine Nuts.

According to the Nevada State Police, the sole occupant of the Ford Explorer was killed.

The crash occurred at around 2:30 a.m., and speed is believed to be a factor.

The vehicle left the highway and struck a tree after traveling about 200 feet.

Because the collision was well off the pavement there wasn’t a significant closure of the highway.

Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies and East Fork medics responded to the scene. The collision is under investigation by the Nevada State Police who cleared the scene at around 7 a.m.

A capsized boat at Topaz Lake resulted in one person’s death and three others being treated around 11:40 a.m. Saturday.

The four people in the boat were tipped into the water but were brought back to shore where CPR was conducted on the person who succumbed.

Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies and East Fork firefighters responded to the incident. East Fork launched Marine 8 to ensure there wasn’t anyone in the water.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue personnel were called out, but cancelled after it became apparent everyone was on shore.

The name of the deceased has yet to be revealed.

Nevada Division of Wildlife is the leading the investigation with the assistance of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Any further inquiries should be directed to NDOW.

It has been three years since two men died at Topaz Lake after a boat capsized in January 2019.

No cause of death has been revealed, but with spring runoff, it’s possible that cold-water shock may have contributed to the death.

Water temperatures of 50-55 degrees are sufficient to cause rapid breathing, gasping, muscle failure and immediate risk of drowning.
