Around 50 people packed into Gardnerville Station on Saturday to celebrate spring’s arrival by learning about gardening in Carson Valley. Craig Witt and Jessica Gardner spoke at the forum sponsored by Main Street Gardnerville.
Having grown tomatoes at the base of the Carson Range for more than a decade myself is that you have to get a running start. I’ve got one mature plant that overwintered, and I’ll start planting seedlings around now and keep them inside until at least the first week of June.
The last storm of winter barely left .02 inches of precipitation in my rain gauge in Genoa and completely missed Minden, which has seen zero precipitation in March. Were it not for a few days in December, this winter would be a complete bust.
It’s going to be warm this week, though no where near the temperatures that set records for four days in 2004, when it was in the mid-80s. Expect the high to hit 75 degrees by Wednesday and hover there until a chance of rain cools things off on Sunday.
Today, the forecast calls for the high temperature to hit 65 degrees with the wind calm around 5 mph this afternoon. You might get away with leaving the garden hoses hooked up tonight with the low kissing the freezing mark.
