Genoa, Nev. — The first big thunderstorms of the season appear to have skipped Douglas County. There was a thunder cell that peppered Western Nevada with lightning strikes, but as it approached the northern Pine Nuts around 7:45 p.m. it dissipated. The Carson-Iceberg Wilderness in the Sierra also saw some strikes.

No wildfires were reported on Thursday evening, according to the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center’s Wild Web application. However, it’s possible some of those strikes will turn into fires. The next few days will tell.

Douglas County commissioners are scheduled to canvass the final vote tally 4 p.m. today. There has been some chatter about protests of the canvass in Clark and Washoe.

Firefighters responded to Leonard Road in the Gardnerville Ranchos for a travel trailer fire around lunchtime Thursday. I didn’t get past St. Gall Catholic Church before the fire was knocked down.

It’s movie night in Gardnerville, with “My Garden of a Thousand Bees” showing at Carson Valley United Methodist Church at 6:30 p.m. and the the OG “Star Wars” showing 8 p.m. at Heritage Park. The bee moving is 53-minutes long, so there should be time to do both, if you’re ambitious.

There isn’t a statue of either Mark Twain or Henry VIII in Carson Valley, but there is one of Snowshoe Thompson. Versions of all three gentlemen will be in the Valley on Saturday. McAvoy Layne and Frank Mullin will be at the Dangberg Home Ranch, while Steve Hale will be at the anniversary celebration of Snowshoe’s statue at Mormon Station State Historic Park.

Sheridan Acre volunteer firefighters are hosting an open house 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Tintabulations will be ringing bells at the Methodist church 7 p.m. Saturday night. It’s going to be a pretty busy weekend, so maybe grab a copy of The R-C to see what all’s on tap.

The forecast calls for sunny skies and a high near 89 degrees today. The wind will pick up out of the northwest at 10-15 mph. There’s a slight chance of thunderstorms on Saturday night. It will heat up over the weekend, but not warmer than we’ve seen so far this year.
