Block grant cycle begins with Aug. 3 meeting

A rendering of what proponents believe Gardnerville Station will eventually look like that was published in December 2018. The project to convert the former gas station into a visitors center has been the largest single recipient of community development block grants in Douglas history, receiving $539,350 over its lifetime. Drainage projects that inspired its acquisition in the first place await work on Highway 395.

A meeting to learn about Douglas County’s 2023 community development block grant cycle is 10 a.m. Aug. 3 at the Minden Inn. Block grants are funded through federal sources through the state and are different from the community grants just awarded by the county.

Topics include what the grants are for, minimum qualifications, the application and selection process and a summary of past projects. Applications are open now.

For the 2023 grant year, the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development is expected to allocate approximately $3.3-3.5 million in grants towards community facilities, planning and capacity building, economic development, micro-enterprise programs, and low/moderate income development (allocation amount subject to approval by congress).

Grants are available on a competitive basis to Nevada’s non-entitlement rural cities and counties.

Eligible projects must meet one of the following:

benefit low-to-moderate income persons

aid in the elimination of slums or blight

solve an urgent need that poses a threat to public health and safety.

Completed grant applications must be submitted to the Community Development Department via ZoomGrants.com. Deadlines are as follows:

Oct. 14 Application deadline in Zoomgrants.com for state CDBG Office.

Feb. 8, 2023 Application deadline for applications to Community Development.

Feb.17, 2023 CDBG grants deadline; complete applications due to state CDBG Office for 2023 Grant Funding.
