Douglas earns No. 3 seed in regional tournament with Reno loss

 The Douglas High girls’ basketball team was rewarded Friday night for taking care of business against Carson.
With the 57-35 win over the Senators, not only do the Tigers close out the season on a four-game winning streak, they finish the regular season as the No. 3 team in the Class 5A North after Reno fell to McQueen Friday night.
With a 17-7 overall record and an 11-5 clip in league play, the Tigers will open up the postseason at home Tuesday against Galena (9-16, 6-10).
Tip-off will be at 6:30 p.m.
Douglas has two wins over the Grizzlies already this season by finals of 52-28 and 42-22.


Friday’s regular season finale
It was Tiger senior Riley Mello who put on a show in Douglas’ regular season finale at Carson.
The senior forward scored 21 points in the win and tallied at least four assists in the process.
Of of an out of bounds play, Aleeah Weaver found Mello for a layup to give Douglas a 12-5 lead late in the first quarter.
Fresh off of the assist, Weaver put together a pretty eurostep for a deposit on the following possession.
Talia Tretton hit Mello for another interior bucket to close the first quarter with a 16-7 lead.
Mello started the second quarter with Douglas’ first basketball before Campbell Dedmon found Mello on the wing for a triple.
The 3-pointer gave the Tigers a 23-10 lead, which blossomed to 27-10 before Carson was able to answer.
Addy Doerr had six points in the opening half, but found her stride in the second, ending the night with 15 points for Douglas.
Dedmon hit a pair of triples over the course of the win to finish the night with 10 points.
The Senators hung around, cutting the gap to 41-30 by the end of the third quarter, but Douglas put together a 16-5 fourth quarter to solidify the final result.


UP NEXT: Should Douglas get passed Galena, No. 2 Damonte Ranch will be waiting in the wings in the regional semifinal for a meeting Thursday to decide who will make the Class 5A North regional finals and the state tournament.
