Genoa, Nev. — An online fundraiser is underway for Douglas 911 Dispatcher Kristin Oilar, whose pancreatic cancer has returned. Kristin has served Douglas County residents for more than 20 years. The link to donate is www.gofundme.com/f/911-dispatcher-continues-her-fight-on-cancer

I hear that Ag Day at the Douglas County Museum & Cultural Center was well attended. I drove by there on my way to Markleeville after the Town Hall Meeting on Saturday and it looked like there were lots of organizations out on the front lawn. Gardnerville resident and 4-H Carson Valley Shepherd Kahlea Hulsey attended with Mae the sheep.

I know the businesses in Markleeville appreciate what trade they can get with Highway 89 closed for the next month but be gentle. I’m sure there will be a big event when the highway reopens.

State road crews are scanning the shoulders on Highway 395 looking for utilities and depths in preparation for work next year. Expect them to be working 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays with some night-time closures. Surveyors are working on elevations for the resurfacing between Waterloo and First Street.

The first week of August saw more than three times the total precipitation in all of 2022. Fortunately, the hay crop was mostly in before the rains came. Who knows? Maybe this will contribute to another cutting.

While August was a record month for precipitation, 2022 is still well short of the 6-inch average for the year, with 3.49 inches, but there have definitely been drier years.

So will we see more thunderstorms? Maybe. The weather statement that there may be more storms covers more than a dozen Nevada and California counties east of the Sierra. The odds are running around 30 percent of a storm in any given place 2-5 p.m. today.

Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, with increasing clouds during the day. The high is expected to hit 91 degrees with thunderstorms clearing by 8 p.m. Then we do it again on Tuesday.
