The Carson Valley Quilt Guild’s 2022 Quilt Show is June 4-5 at the Douglas County Community and Senior Center in Gardnerville. The theme of the Biennial Show is “The Great Outdoors.”

Featuring $20,000 in prize money, the show is open to quilt artists throughout the United States.

More than 200 quilts will be on display in a variety of categories, including appliqué, pieced, mixed media, art representational, art, original design—and more.

Wearable art on display will include heirloom sewing, smocking, period clothing and costumes, patchwork jackets and skirts or pants, decorated children’s clothing, and even purses and bags.

This is a judged show and awards range from first place - $475-$650; second place - $275-$450; and third place - $125, depending upon the size of the quilt. Additionally, Best of Show - $1,000; Sponsor (FPA): Best Fusion of color and design - $350; Show Chair: Can name award for each show - $250; and Viewers’ Choice - $250.

The judge for this event is Kathie Kerler, an award-winning quilter who has completed rigorous courses in design and embroidery through London City and Guilds College of London, England, and at the Lesage School of Needlework in Paris, France.

A great line-up of vendors will bring their wares to the show along with free demonstrations of tools, techniques, machines, long-arms, handwork and more. Each Vendor, along with various manufacturers, will provide wonderful Door Prizes. Attendees will receive a ticket, found in their show brochure, upon entry. If your number matches, you win a prize.

There will be more than 30 raffle baskets made by Guild members. Upon entry, each person gets one free ticket to be used toward the raffle baskets.

Additional tickets may be purchased — one ticket for $1 or six tickets for $5. Half of the baskets will be awarded on Saturday and the other half on Sunday. You do not need to be present to win and the baskets can be picked up Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Proceeds from the Basket Raffles will fund scholarships for local art students and arts’ programs.

A Heritage Quilt Exhibit will be presented twice each day displaying antique quilts and revealing the stories behind them.

Guest Lecturer is Katie Pasquini Masopust who has produced high quality contemporary art quilts that have been coveted and collected by a broad range of admirers. Her work has evolved from structured Mandalas and mind-blowing dimensional pieces to very painterly landscapes and abstracts executed with the finest fabrics and most creative stitching techniques.

Katie’s easy, energetic manner has made her a very popular teacher and lecturer. When not in residence at her studio in Fortuna, Calif., she travels the world presenting her contemporary quilting theories and techniques. A prolific author, Katie shares her enthusiasm for the art of creative quilting through her numerous books and many classes.

Winning quilts will be on display from a Guild Challenge with members creating small quilts depicting the show theme, The Great Outdoors.

Each participant was given two pieces of unrelated fabric plus a strip of wool roving that had to be used in a recognizable manner.

At the Guild’s February meeting, members voted for their favorite designs. The winners are “Eagle’s Overlook” in first place by Laurie Lile, “Hoot in the Great Outdoors” by Terrie Peets in second place and third place was “Summer Sightings” by Nancy Lampson.

Quilt Show hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., both days. Admission to the show is $10 each day or $15 for two days. Children under 12 years of age are admitted free with a paid adult.

The Douglas County Community and Senior Center is located at 1329 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville and there will be ample free parking and free Wi-Fi. Catered lunches and snacks will be available for purchase onsite from Bella Vita.
