Douglas High football, try as it might, couldn’t muster up any points against Reno Friday night.
In a 21-0 loss, the Tigers had positive takeaways thanks to getting more reps in leading into the contest in practice.
The game was 0-0 until the final moments of the first half.
“It was a good game. Hard fought on both sides,” said Douglas head coach Kyle Mays. “Reno has always been a tough team.”
The Huskies took a 7-0 lead into the locker room but neither team could establish a rhythm to open up the second half.
The Tigers gave Reno a couple of chances at a short field, but consistently held tough and got the ball back without damage.
After a short punt, Reno had the ball inside the red zone.
After getting inside the 10, Douglas forced a fumble and was able to recover to stall the scoring chance.
“Our kids were playing disciplined defense and running to the ball and making tackles,” Mays said. “When they scored that touchdown in the first half, we had a lot of missed tackles.”
The Tigers were again backed up in their own end, when a deflected pass found the hands of Reno’s Jack Adams.
Adams hauled in the ball around the 20 and hustled down the home sideline into the end zone to double the Huskies lead early in the fourth quarter.
Reno’s final score of the night spanned 50 yards on five plays.
Husky quarterback Hayden Parga called his own number for a 3-yard touchdown carry with 5:43 remaining in regulation.
“It didn’t go our way and that’s just how life rolls, right,” said Mays.
Offensively, Douglas ended the night with five turnovers, four of which came in the first half.
Regardless, Mays couldn’t have been happier to finally get his first game under his belt as head coach in front of a home crowd.
“Having people in the stands, who love you and cheer for you,” said Mays, “You can’t beat it, even in a tough loss like that.”
UP NEXT: Douglas (0-3) will head to Galena (0-3) Friday night in search of its first win.
