The Mahogany Drive congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Minden co-hosted a community blood drive with Vitalant Blood Services on May 8.

The Latter-day Saints donated 31 pints of blood and gathered nearly 300 pounds of food for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet.

Spokeswoman Lindsey Torres said the church will conduct future community blood drives in Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton areas.

Vitalant Donor Recruitment Representative Jessica Tischler said a pint of blood has the potential to affect up to three lives.

“In the Northern Nevada and Northern California region we need to collect 150 units of blood a day to make sure there is a safe supply of blood for patients when they need it the most,” Tischler said. “One in seven patients going into a hospital will need blood. Your donation helps patients with cancer, undergoing surgery, or during a trauma.”
