A California man faces eluding and DUI charges after he tried to escape deputies as Monday’s storm was arriving.

Douglas Carr, 34, was arrested after he allegedly sideswiped another vehicle stopped at Vicki Lane and Stephanie at around 6:40 p.m.

According to the witness, a gray Toyota pickup with California plates didn’t stop. The victim followed the pickup until deputies spotted the vehicle turning onto Jackie Lane.

A deputy tried to block the vehicle, which went around the patrol car and accelerated to 55 mph while on Jackie Lane.

The deputy followed the pickup, which entered Vicki Lane at full speed and went airborne with the front end hit the highway. The deputy reported the vehicle sped up to 60 mph before stopping at South Santa Barbara and Hot Springs Road.

Carr was taken into custody and after deputies obtained a warrant they took a blood test. Carr submitted to a preliminary breath test which indicated he had a .149 blood alcohol content.

Deputies were in the area in connection with a report of a reckless driver who was pulled over on Highway 395 near Cradlebaugh Bridge.

• A California woman who failed to appear in connection with an embezzled U-Haul in June has been returned to Douglas County custody.

Shunda Catalano, 41, was arrested June 1 at Stateline on felony embezzlement and false identity charges but was released on June 3.

She was taken into custody on a failure to appear warrant on Dec. 8 and is scheduled to appear in Tahoe Township Justice Court next week.

Catalano said that she and a man had been living in the U-Haul.

According to the Nevada Department of Corrections, Catalano was convicted of two counts possession of a stolen credit card in 2004.

• A woman, who allegedly had a loaded hypodermic with her child in the back seat, waived her preliminary hearing in East Fork Justice Court on Wednesday.

Charlene Rae Dietrich, 37, was taken into custody Dec. 8 after a deputy spotted her vehicle parked near Jake’s Wetlands at 1 a.m.

During a check on her and the child, due to the frigid conditions, it was learned Dietrich had seven warrants out of Montana, but none were extraditable. She was taken into custody after deputies reported finding both heroin and methamphetamine in the vehicle.

Under an agreement, Dietrich will go to district court on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance.

• A man arrested in connection with a Dec. 4 theft above Holbrook Highlands was released on Wednesday.

Sampson Lucio Nigra, 22, was allegedly seen on camera taking an all-terrain vehicle from a property near the top of the mountain.

He appeared in East Fork Justice Court on a burglary charge in connection with the incident.
