Joan Marie Therese Cummings

Joan Marie Therese Cummings (nee Hazzard) died peacefully of natural causes on October 18, 2020. She was 94 years old. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Robert, and a son, James Paul. Joan is survived by her remaining children: Scott Richard; Gregory Robert and his wife Cassie; Therese Joan; and Patrice Marie. A grandmother and great-grandmother, she is also survived by her grandson, Cory James Foley and his wife Jessica; and her two great-grandchildren: Liam and Murphi Foley.

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota to Gerald Daniel and Agnes Marcella Hazzard (nee Klein) on Christmas Day in 1925, Joan was the youngest of four children. Prior to marrying her husband, Jim, on September 11, 1948, Joan had been working as secretary to the head of Chemical Engineering at 3M in St. Paul, Minnesota. She also worked for a period of time as a model for a local magazine, promoting products such as Coca Cola. When she and her husband started their new family, Joan decided to leave that life behind in order to stay at home and raise their children.

Because her husband's work involved frequent moves around the country, as well as overseas, Joan found herself packing up and moving children and household multiple times throughout their 41-year marriage. She never seemed to mind the frequent relocations, seeing each one as a new adventure. Following her husband's death in 1989, Joan continued to live in their Stillwater, OK home for a number of years before making one last move to Gardnerville, NV in 1998. There she remained an active and well-loved member of her community until her passing.

While she always shared an artistic flair that was prominent in her family of origin, Joan found her special niche in the area of stained glass. Those who have been gifted with her exquisite and beautiful pieces of stained glass artwork will always treasure them as lasting memories of her warm and generous spirit. It is a spirit that will be greatly missed.

Out of an abundance of caution and a desire to protect the health of both community and community members during this COVID-19 pandemic, a memorial service for Joan will not be held.
