Carson High boys and girls track coach Steve Nelms said his girls 4x400 relay team could easily finish under 4 minutes, 10 seconds. He wasn’t giving his team enough credit.
Abby Pradere, Annika Wick, Katherine Oppedahl and Ashley Britt blazed to a Northern 4A leading time of 4:04.71 on Saturday in the League Championships at Carson High.
The meet also served as a qualifier for this Saturday’s Northern 4A Championships at Reed. The top three finishers at regionals will advance to the State Championships.
All of Carson’s boys and girls athletes who were expected to advance to regionals were able to make it safely through to this Saturday’s meet. In addition the CHS girls won the Sierra League title with 155 points to outdistance second place Galena, which finished with 124 points.
Galena’s boys won the Sierra League title with 150 points with the second through fifth place teams finishing within 16 points of each other. Galena was followed by Manogue (101), Damonte Ranch (100), Douglas (95) and Carson (85).
Another highlight in the meet came when Carson’s Hunter Rauh, Walker MacKenzie, Zach Sever and Ethan Byasse set the fastest time in the north this year in the 4x800, finishing in 8:12.65.
Pradere, the defending state champion in the 800 and 1600, safely qualified for regionals in both events, finishing in 2:16.27 in the 800 and cruising to a 5:19.53 finish in the 1600.
Gabriela Lopez also qualified for regionals for Carson in the 800, finishing in 2:27.79. Hannah Kaiser qualified for regionals in two events for CHS, finishing in 5:34.53 in the 1600 and 12:25.56 in the 3200.
Britt qualified for regionals in four events. She had the third fastest time in the 100 hurdles at 16.29, the fastest time in the 300 hurdles in a season best 46.90 and was on the 4x200 team of Annika Wick, Taryn Encinas and Oppedahl, who finished with the second fastest time of 1:46.76, .09 off the fastest time.
Natalyn Wakeling, Wick and Oppedahl all had outstanding meets as Oppedahl qualified for regionals in four events as well. Wakeling, a freshman, had the second fastest time in the 100, blazing to a season best 12.94.
Carson had three runners qualify for regionals in the 200 as Wick finished in 26.89, Oppedahl finished in 27.00 and Taryn Encinas finished in 27.17. The 4x100 team of Oppedahl, Erica Basa, Encinas and Wakeling qualified for regionals with the second fastest time of 50.39.
Merce Tarrayo also had an outstanding meet for Carson’s girls. Tarrayo uncorked the 35-foot throw Nelms said she was capable of as she had the second best mark at 36-2. Tarrayo also had the best mark in the discus with a season best 121-04.
In addition, Angelica Germain-Sanchez, Erin Cartier, Claire Cartier and Kaitlin Schulze qualified for regionals in the 4x800 in 11:13.63.
For Carson’s boys, Ben Granados safely qualified in four events. He finished the 100 in 11.30, the 200 in 22.67, the 400 in 51.35 and along with Nick Batien, Hunter Matthies and Hunter Rauh, qualified in the 4x400 in 3:31.18.
Also for Carson, Rauh qualified in the 800 in 2:02.36, Byasse safely qualified in the 1600 in 4:45.12, Sever safely qualified in the 3200 in 10:24.80, Matthies, Gilbert Vasquez Polanco, Dominic Martinez and Misreal Becerra qualified in the 4x200 in 1:39.93 and Jakob Heller safely qualified in the triple jump at 39-9. Manuel Vasquez also qualified in the shot put at 41-11 1/4 and freshman Kai Miller qualified in the polo vault with a mark of 10-6.
