Local roundup: Carson High girls rally for win

The Carson High girls basketball team almost paid the price for a poor practice on Monday before coming back to beat a much improved Hug team, 52-41, on Tuesday.

Hug, which fell to 6-6, led by as many as 11 points in the first half against Carson, which improved to 5-8. CHS closed to within 21-18 at halftime and tied the score 31-31 after three quarters.

“We started off very slow,” said Carson coach Doug Whisler, who added he wasn’t pleased with his team’s effort in practice on Monday. “We could not throw it in the ocean in the first half.”

Carson was also hurt by Hug post player Legieli Aonga, who scored 15 points. Whisler said Aonga took advantage of Trinity Beard’s absence when he took her out of the game. “She did a pretty good job on her,” said Whisler about Beard against Aonga.

Bella Kordonowy scored 17 points, Naycy Alvarez and Abby Golik each added 11 points and Abby Pradere added six points for CHS. Whisler also praised the defensive play of Camille Kordonowy for the Senators.

Carson will play at Reno at 5:15 p.m. Friday.

CHS boys fall

A short-handed Carson High boys basketball team battling sickness fell to Hug 81-79 in triple overtime on Tuesday. One of the eight players, Will Breeding, was brought up from the junior varsity. Carson finished the game with five players as Colton Schafer and Kahle Good fouled out in overtime and sophomore Joey Summers fouled out in the third overtime.

CHS trailed 34-26 at halftime but came back to take the lead in the third quarter. Carson led with eight seconds left in regulation when Hug scored to force overtime.

“I’m so incredibly proud of how all eight guys stuck together in a hostile gym and we never backed down from the challenge,” Carson coach Jordan Glover said. “Every player went into the game and added something for us.

“Last night my players showed how much heart they have and left it out there. As a coach I cant’ ask for much more than that. Winning and losing doesn’t tell you how good or bad my team is. Fighting together as hard as hard as they did tells you how much they love one another.”

Glover said costly turnovers and missed free throws down the stretch was the difference. “But these guys never got down on themselves,” Glover said. “It is a big learning lesson.”

Nathan Smothers scored 20 points, Summers had 18 points, freshman Parsa Hadjighasemi had 16 points and Colton Schafer added eight points for Carson, which plays at 7 p.m. Friday at Reno.

Prunty strong in ski

Brynn Prunty had a strong effort for the Carson High girls ski team on Wednesday, finishing 12th in the slalom at the Tahoe Basin Ski League event at Heavenly. Prunty finished her two runs in 33.66 and 32.87 for a time of 1:06.5.

Dayton girls fall

The Dayton girls basketball team fell to Truckee, 60-23, on Tuesday. Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said she was pleased with her team’s play in the first half as the Dust Devils trailed 30-17 at halftime. “Our girls came out tough, running everything down defensively. They were moving the ball well on offense.”

But Frantz said Truckee took advantage of her team’s turnovers in the second half to extend its lead. Shainey Vincent scored 11 points and Hannah Coltrin had eight points and 12 rebounds, Morgan Boehme had two points and seven rebounds and Eden Evans added two points for Dayton.

“Even though we didn’t score much in the second half, it was good to get going offensively and I was proud of my girls for pulling together even being down at the end of the game,” Frantz said.
