Fallon sweeps doubleheader to take weekend series

Despite a first-game 6-5 loss in extra innings on Friday, Fallon’s baseball team roared back to sweep a doubleheader Saturday against Lowry, 14-4 and 3-1, to maintain second place in league standings.

The Wave responded with its bats in Saturday’s first game of the twin bill, pounding out 13 hits to give starting pitcher Hayden Strasdin plenty of support. Strasdin, the team’s stopper after a loss, scattered four hits, walked two and struck out seven in going the distance.

Both teams scored a run in the second inning with Fallon taking the first lead on Shaw Lee’s solo home run. Lowry, though, responded with a run in the bottom of the inning and took a 3-1 lead after three innings.

Fallon, though, sliced the lead to a run in the fourth inning on Reile Cole’s sacrifice fly. Irvin had singled and moved around the bases into scoring position.

Over the next three innings, the Wave knocked Lowry pitching for 10 runs.

Lee’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning tied the game. Tommy McCormick smacked an RBI double in the four-run fifth inning, and Cole single to centerfield to drive in another run. Edgar Alvarado, who reached base on a double, eventually scored on a passed ball.

Alvarado and Daniel Seline each singled in a run in the sixth, and Brenden Larson’s fielder’s choice led to another run. Tommy McCormick added a pair of runs with a single.

Lowry’s pitching led to three Fallon runs in the seventh. With the bases loaded, Fallon scored on a hit batter, a walk and Cole’s RBI single, his third RBI of the game, that gave the Wave a 10-run lead.

Tommy McCormick drove in four runs, and Lee added two more.

Lee threw a six-hitter in five innings to lead Fallon to the doubleheader sweep. He allowed one run, struck out five and walked one.

The Wave scored a run in each of the third, fourth and seventh innings.

Tommy McCormick singled in runs in the third and seventh, and Brenden Larsen ripped an RBI double in the fourth.

Lowry took the first game on Friday with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Buckaroos jumped out in front of Fallon with a 3-1 first inning. Nate Galusha scored Fallon’s first run, but Lowry responded with two run-scoring singles from Josh Leveille and Josiah Chapman and also crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

The Wave tied the game in the fifth inning. Irvin tripled and scored on Tommy McCormick’s sacrifice fly. Sean McCormick also trippled, and Galusha batted him in. After Lowry took the lead in the sixth, Fallon tied the game in the seventh on an error and Lee’s sacrifice fly.

Galusha, who pitched in the eighth frame, took the loss. Alvarado began the game and surrendered three runs before Irvin took over and threw the next 6.1 innings.

Truckee continues to lead the Northern 3A at 15-2 with Fallon and Elko behind at 14-4. Fourth-place Spring Creek hosts Fallon this weekend with a single game on Friday at 2 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday. The Spartans lost two of three game last weekend to Elko.
