Three baskets and 12 turnovers in 16 minutes.
That was the sum total of the Carson High girls basketball team’s offense in the second half against Galena on Friday night at Morse Burley Gym.
Galena wasn’t much better, but the Grizzlies, who didn’t score a basket in the final quarter, made five free throws in the final 2-minutes 57-seconds to grab a 28-24 victory.
The loss dropped the Senators to 3-9 with just four games left, including a Tuesday night tussle against Sierra League-leader Bishop Manogue at 5:15.
It was especially disappointing because the game was tied 16-16 at the half. The Senators led the first 10 minutes of the game.
The final numbers weren’t pretty:
20 turnovers led to 13 Galena points.
Carson went 3-for-11 from the free-throw line.
The Senators shot 26 percent from the floor.
“Turnovers, that’s the game,” said a disappointed CHS coach Melissa Larsen said after the contest. “We had costly misses at the line. We couldn’t hit a shot.”
Still, it was a game that Carson had a chance to win.
With the score tied at 22 with 3:40 left, Carson’s offense went south. Carson went 1-for-5 down the stretch, turned the ball over four times and went 0-for-3 at the line.
Galena took a 23-22 lead with 2:57 left when Taylor Crofoot converted one of two shots from the line. After four straight empty possessions for the Senators, Zoe Cionaster made two free throws for a 25-22 lead with 52 seconds left.
Lily Bouza, who led Carson with eight points, turned the ball over and Galena scored one from the line for a 26-22 lead. Abby Golik scored with 19 seconds left, but Kristin Farrell converted two more free throws with 18 seconds left.
First-place Miners top Tigers
Bishop Manogue defeated Douglas, 71-45. Julia McElwee scored 18 and Kenna Holt 16 to lead the first-place Miners.
Manogue improved to 10-2 in league. Douglas dropped to 6-6 and a tie for second-place with Galena in league.
Dayton girls remain winless
ELKO — The Dust Devils dropped to 0-12 with a 63-18 loss to Spring Creek on Friday night in a Northern 3A game.
No other information was available.
Dayton visits Elko on Saturday at 1 p.m.
VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL
Manogue romps vs. DHS
RENO — Gabe Bansuelo poured in 31 points to lead Bishop Manogue to a 71-37 Sierra League victory at home against Douglas on Friday night.
Manogue (10-2 league, 17-4 overall) used a 31-15 run through the second quarter to extend its win streak to nine games. Douglas (5-7, 7-14) only trailed 23-21 early in the second quarter before the Miners pulled away. Manogue was on top 47-24 at the intermission.
Dayton boys defeated
ELKO – Spring Creek outlasted Dayton, 57-42, Friday night in a Northern 3A game.
Dayton dropped to 4-8 in league play.
The Dust Devils face first-place Elko on Saturday.
