Carson High boys hold off late Wooster rally

RENO — The drought is over.

Carson High’s boys basketball team, behind the second-half scoring of Dawson Lamb and Trent Robison, snapped a four-game losing streak with a 56-50 win over Wooster on Tuesday at Craig Congdon Gym.

Lamb scored eight of his 11 in the second half and Robison scored all eight of his points in the final quarter.

Carson improved to 4-11, and will host Douglas on Friday at 7 p.m.

“It’s been a while,” Carson coach Jordan Glover said. “We came in with a positive mindset. We’ve been beat down, but the kids have not given up.”

Carson played without Derek Barry, who was benched for missing practice on Monday.

The Senators used an 11-5 run over the final three minutes of the third quarter to build a 45-33 lead entering the final period.

Lamb had back-to-back baskets and seldom-used backup Colton Schafer, who started in place of Barry, drained two free throws for a 40-26 lead.

After Wooster scored five straight points, Jonny Randall (14 points) made two free throws and Jordan Torres banged home a 3-pointer for a 12-point lead.

“The reserves played really well,” Glover said. “Colton has been working really hard lately.”

“One of our top shooters missed five straight 3-pointers,” said Wooster coach Jose Parra. “Then we turned the ball over.”

Ben Zelisse-Stewart kept the Colts in the game early in the fourth. Wooster turned the ball over four times in the quarter and went 4-for-11 shooting.

Robison’s three-point play and Randall’s layup helped the Senators to a 54-40 lead with 2:50 remaining.

That is when the game went south on the Senators.

Robison got a flush off a Wooster turnover, but was called for a technical foul for hanging on the rim.

Stewart made one of two to make it 56-41 with 1:50 left. After a Carson turnover, Lamb was hit with a technical foul, as he and Parra jawed at each other after a call. Stewart made both shots this time. Carson also was hit with a bench technical, and Stewart hit two more free tosses to make it 56-45. Jesus De La Puente made it 56-47 with two free throws.

Lamb had a chance to extend the lead, but missed both free throws. Stewart dropped in a 3-pointer to make it 56-50 with 23 seconds remaining.

It stayed that way because Carson went 0-for-8 at the line inside the last minute of the contest.

“We didn’t keep our emotions in check the entire game, Glover said. “We were not disciplined.”
