Feds Feed Families food drive underway

“Feds Feed Families” is holding its 2018 food drive through Sept. 15. Donated food will benefit hungry families in Carson City through the Ron Wood Family Resource Center and Friends In Service Helping (FISH). In 2017, the food drive provided 2,722 pounds of food for the hungry in the community, including 1,346 pounds of fresh produce through donations by farmers and attendees of Carson City’s 3rd & Curry St. Farmers Market.

Anyone wishing to donate canned and nonperishable goods to the food drive can drop them off at the Ron Wood Family Resource Center from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays and FISH during weekday business hours. Donors are asked to note the donations are to the Feds Feed Families food drive.

The focus of this year’s food drive is on collecting nutritious high-protein foods like tuna, chili and peanut butter along with low-sodium and low-sugar canned produce. Both pantry managers say in addition to food donations, they also need volunteers year-round to assist with donations and distribution. For information, contact the Ron Wood Family Resource Center pantry manager Susan Raty at 775-884-2269, ext. 107, or Liz Patterson, FISH food pantry distribution manager, at 775-882-FISH (3474), ext. 109.

Donate at Farmers Market

Linda Marrone, the 3rd & Curry St. Farmers Market manager, is coordinating fresh produce donations from the market for the fourth year.

Public donations for fresh produce can be made at Saturday’s market during Farmers Market Week.

Those who donate are eligible to win a market raffle prize.

The Carson City market donated more than 1,346 pounds of fresh produce to the Feds Feed Families food drive during the 2017 Food Drive.

Feds Feed Families is organized through the voluntary efforts of area agency employees. The food drive began in 2011. Any agency that wishes to participate may join. Participating agencies in Carson City include the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Geological Survey, Federal Highway Administration and USDA Rural Development.

For information, contact food drive coordinator Kelly Clark at 775-887-1222, ext. 4768.
