A weekend of basketball kicks off Friday

The Thanksgiving Holiday Classic youth basketball tournament kicks off this weekend at Venturacci Gym.

There are about 19 teams of 10 participating, split among three age groups — grades 1-3, 4-6 and 7-8. Competition starts Friday afternoon at 12:45 with the Greenwave and Warriors of the 4th-6th grade division. Games will continue through Friday afternoon, all day Saturday and Sunday morning — a full bracket schedule can be found on the Churchill County Parks and Recreation department’s website.

This tournament also serves as a fundraiser for the Greenwave boys’ basketball team. There will be 50/50 tickets being sold as well as a raffle and silent auction for various prizes donated by the community. Proceeds will go toward the team’s travel expenses for away games this year.

Members of the varsity boys’ basketball team will also act as officials for the tournament as well as hosting free throw contests.
