Diving into state

The Greenwave swim team competes against the best swimmers in the 3A League tomorrow, traveling to Carson City for the state meet.

All of the boys’ relay teams qualified for state as did the girls’ 4x100 team; several individuals will also be competing. In all, Fallon coach Ken Grimes said Fallon will bring 11 swimmers.

The relay teams have been doing well this year, consistently placing near the top. Isaac Kelsey and Christian Nemeth will also be strong individual competitors; Grimes said Nemeth would be a contender in the 100 Freestyle, where he placed second in regionals. Amber Revels has also had a good season, competing on the relay teams and placing high in a number of individual events.

Grimes said state will be a battle though, with plenty of strong competition and Boulder City will be the team to beat.

“State’s going to be tough,” he said. “There’s good competition to be sure.”

While only a few will compete, Grimes said he plans to take as many people as he can. He wants to have lots of team spirit at the meet and show the younger swimmers what state competition is like.

“It gives these younger kids a chance to see what they’re working towards,” he said.

Practices have been challenging the last few days. The Churchill County pool has been closed for maintenance and unavailable for the team’s use.

“It’s the big SNAFU at the moment,” Grimes said. “But we’re working around it.”

With the practicing they are able to do, the team has been working on improving their conditioning. As of Wednesday, the hope was for the pool to be open again Thursday so they could practice in the water again.

“We’re taking it day by day and seeing what they can do,” Grimes said of this week’s practices.

Fallon also had a good regional meet last week with the boys taking third place as a team and the girls taking fourth.

The Greenwave had a great season this year. Grimes noted several first time swimmers were on the team and a number of them qualified for regionals; several seniors also qualified.

“We had an incredible season,” he said.
