Carson High girls have strong day at track trials

Trials in track and field are all about doing well enough to move on, and that’s what Carson High did on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

According to CHS coach Robert Maw, everybody he expected to move on to next Saturday’s 4A regional finals at CHS did so.

Distance standout Abigail Pradere led the Senators, qualifying first in the 800 (2:23.80) and 1600 (5:19.48), and she ran the anchor leg on the 1600-meter relay team that led all qualifiers with a 4:12.1

Annika Wick, Jaidyn Shepard and Ashley Britt were other members of the team.

“I’m really pleased,” Maw said. “Abby ran good times in tough conditions.”

Maw also was pleased with the performance of Britt, who also qualified in the 100 and 300 hurdles (PR of 17.39 and 48.07).

“She had a good race,” Maw said. “She ran a PR last week at Douglas. She is getting there.”

Britt had off-season surgery, but she appears to be peaking at the right time.

Abbey Paulson and Anya Woodbury also turned in impressive performances in the jumps.

Paulson led all qualifiers in the triple jump with a PR of 34-5, and she also qualified in the long jump with a mark of 15-8.

Woodbury was second in the long jump with a PR of 16-7 1/4.

“Abbey had the best mark of the day, so she’ll be jumping in the last group,” Maw said. “Anya scratched her first two jumps, so I moved her to the 24-foot board and she got a 33-footer to make the finals. That was a little scary.”

On the boys side, it was a tough day in individual events.

Harry Meyer moved on in both the 110 hurdles (16.34) and 300 hurdles (42.81). Teammate Brandon Copeland ran a PR of 42.29.

Ben Granados qualified in the 100 with a PR of 11.53. He barely missed in the 200 with a 23.82. Greg Wallace moved on in the high jump with an effort of 6-1 and Adam Maw got the last triple-jump spot with a 39-8

Carson’s 1600 relay team ran a 3:35.8 to finish second in its heat and fourth overall; the 3200 team was ninth overall in 8:47.05; the 400 team was sixth overall.

Dylan Mayo, the No. 1 seed in the triple jump, didn’t compete. He has been bothered by injuries this season.

There was some controversy, however, during the meet.

Damonte Ranch’s 800 boys relay team was DQ’d for failing to check in on time.

Also, Reed’s boys 400 team was DQd for an exchange violation. And, Douglas standout John Munyan was disqualified in the 800 for breaking in too early from his staggered position.

3A: Ply sets 2

school records

FALLON — J.J. Ply set school records in both hurdle events at Saturday’s 3A track and field trials at Fallon.

Ply ran a 14.63 in the 110 high hurdles and a 39.13 in the 300 hurdles, breaking school records that had existed since 1999 and 1997, respectively. He also qualified in the pole vault, clearing 10-feet. He will automatically advance in the high jump because only 12 signed up to compete, and all 12 move on without jumping.

“It’s only the second time this year he’s run the 300s,” Dayton coach Mike Paul said. “He didn’t feel he was good enough. I knew he could run them well. His hurdle form is so good. His 110 race was very clean.”

Carson Crosby moved on in his three individual events. He was second in the 400 (53.24), seventh in the 200 (23.87) and ninth in the 100 (11.66). Jeffrey Walker moved on in the pole vault (10-0) and the hurdles (4th, 43.10). David Delfin qualified fifth in the discus (133-7) and Chance Schlachta qualified seventh in the discus (107-10 1/2).

On the girls side, Ashley Mason was the leading qualifier in the triple jump with a leap of 33-10 1/2 and she was third in the long jump at 16-0 1/2. Kassie Strong finished seventh in the discus with a PR of 106-2. Rebecca Mason qualified eighth in the high jump at 4-6 and ninth in the 400 at 63.92. McKenzie Montero qualified in the shot put with a throw of 27-7 1/2, Sydney Strickler qualified seventh in the 200 at 27.27 and Grace Wells went 7-feet in the pole vault.

1A: Gibson sparkles for

Sierra Lutheran girls

FALLON — Aleyna Gibson qualified in three events at Saturday’s 1A trials.

Gibson qualified first in the 400 (62.57), was second in the 200 (27.39) and third in the 100 (13.31).

Freshman Rosalie Antonucci advanced in the 100 (8th, 14.75) and eighth in the 200 (31.17). Melissa Steele qualified eighth in the 400 with a PR of 73.53. Grace Bonafede was third in the long jump with a season-best of 14-0 3/4.

As expected, the Falcons qualified four 800 runners to next week’s finals in Carson City.

Sophomore Taylor Davison led all qualifiers with a season best of 2:37.95. Elaina Marchegger was second with a season-best of 2:39.43, Emily McNeely was fourth with a 2:40.78 and Clare Davison was seventh with a 2:45.54.

On the boys side, Grant Goins won the 200 with a PR of 23.63 and he finished fifth in the 100 at 11.57.

Jared Marchegger led qualifiers in the 1600 in 4:55.37. He was fifth in the 800 with a 2:14.38. Ricky McNeely was second-best in the 1600 (4:55.99) and third in the 800 with a PR of 2:10.16. In the field events, Peyton Hedwall led the shot put qualifiers at 42-4 1/4 and was second in the discus at 110-9. Jeremy Hellwinkel won the discus with a PR of 112-6 and was second in the shot at 33-10.

Blake Ranalla was third in the long jump at 18-6.

Virginia City’s Cole Hess won the 400 (52.00) and the 800 (2:05.24).
