Darrell Moody: College Exposure Showcase coming to Carson City

If you are interested in playing basketball at the next level, circle Oct. 14 and 15 on your calendar.

That is when the College Exposure Showcase, in conjunction with the Carson City Parks and Recreation and Carson High Basketball Boosters Club, comes to the Multi-Purpose Athletic Center.

The cost is $195 if you register before Oct. 1 and $245 after that. Camp hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. This gives a high schooler a chance to learn what it takes to play at the next level under the watchful eye of several college coaches. Besides drills and fundamental work, the campers will be divided into teams and play games both days during the camp.

Two of the coaches, Columbia’s Rob Hoyt and Lance Von Vogt of William Jessup have loose ties to the community. Hoyt recruited ex-Carson star Rafe King, who played at Columbia for two years before moving onto the four-year level. Van Vogt just signed Jayden DeJoseph this past spring.

Other coaches who will be in attendance are Jessup assistant Brad Rogers, George Hernandez of Folsom Lake CC, Aaron Landon of South Puget Sound, Ray Navarro of Yakima Valley CC and Osa Esene of Blue Mountain CC. By rule, junior colleges in California are unable to offer scholarships or tuition assistance of any kind. Schools in Oregon or Washington are able to do so.

The showcase is the brainchild of Brant Minor, who played two years at the University of Portland and was an assistant coach for five years at Southern Oregon University, the same school that recently signed Tez Allen. Minor also ran the Oregon Stars, a highly successful travel ball program.

“We are looking for all ages of high school kids,” Minor said. “We are hoping to get at least 60 kids. It’s probably more beneficial for juniors and seniors, but it’s good for younger players who want to get noticed and learn what it takes to play at the next level.”

Minor has worked basketball camps at Tennessee, Duke, Gonzaga and Oregon. He also runs his own camps in his hometown of Grants Pass, Ore.

Minor was a three-time all conference player at Grants Pass High School, and he earned all-state honors as a senior.

Don’t look now, but Carson High opens its doors on Monday, and the first football game is Saturday in Pocatello, Idaho, at Holt Arena on the Idaho State University campus.

Carson, Douglas and Galena are all making the trek to the annual Rocky Mountain Rumble. The event pits some of Idaho’s best teams against teams from other states.

Carson opens against Lewistion at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and at least 35 parents are expected to make the trip.

Douglas plays Rigby at 10 a.m.

Galena and Spanish Springs will play at 4 and 7 p.m., respectively.

It will be a short turnaround, as Carson will return home and play perennial powerhouse Reno on Sept. 1 at home.

This is Carson’s second trip to the Rocky Mountain Rumble. In 2011, it lost to Highland, 34-0.
