The life of Jesus Christ will unfold on the stage of the Carson City Community Center when “Godspell,” the Broadway musical by three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz, opens Thursday.
Carson High School Performing Arts is holding its production of the musical, which will run for three days inside the center’s Bob Boldrick Theater.
Based on the Gospel of Matthew, “Godspell” tells the story of a small group of people learning to become a community when all seems lost. The story unfolds through parables, lessons, storytelling, songs and dances under the leadership of Jesus Christ.
An eclectic blend of songs, ranging from pop to vaudeville, is employed as the story of Jesus’ life dances across the stage.
New arrangements of such recognizable songs are included, such as “Day By Day,” “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord,” and “By My Side.”
Directed by Andie Anderson and Andy Sonnemaker, Jesus’ messages of kindness, tolerance and love will come to life with the help of more than 40 CHS students.
Leading the cast is junior Wesley Sonnemaker as Jesus. Also performing are seniors Carly Peckham, Kathryn Moran and Isaiah Williams; juniors Melanie Proctor, Leslie Torres and Charlie Moser; sophomore Angela Cirone; and freshmen Quentin Powers and Trevor Young.
Additionally, much of the production will be interpreted with the help of CHS’ American Sign Language program, led by Mary Anne Weaver.
Performance times are 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday.
Tickets, available at the door, cost $12 for general admission, $10 for seniors, $5 for students. Cash or check are accepted.
