Prep roundup: Hawley has big day; 4 CHS swimmers make state

YERINGTON — Dayton High’s Zach Hawley continued his season-long dominance, winning both the shot put and discus at Saturday’s Northern 1A regionals at Yerington High School.

Hawley set a school record in the shot put with a throw of 59-6 3/4 and won the discus with a season-best throw of 169-4, good for second place all-time behind Josh Koch.

“Zach threw well,” Dayton coach Mike Paul said. “He had a good weekend.”

J.J. Ply moved onto state in four events — the 110 high hurdles, 300 hurdles, high jump and pole vault. He was second in the high hurdles (15.75) and second in the high jump (6-4) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (42.28) and fourth in the pole vault.

“He had some tightness, so we pulled him in the pole vault as soon as he qualified,” Paul said.

The one surprise on the boys side is that Brady Heusser didn’t qualify. He was 11th in the 1600 (4:51.79) and 13th in the 3200 (11:18.81).

“Brady got real sick this week,” Paul said. “It’s something that’s been going around at school. He had a deep chest cold. He tried to give it a shot.”

On the girls side, only Zaria Landis (1600, 5:30.66) and Samantha Casanelli (discus, 96-6) made it through. Both finished fourth.

“The 1600 everybody went out slow and it turned into a kicker’s race, and fortunately Zaria had some left at the end,” Paul said.

The 1600-meter team of Rachel Hadley, Landis, Rebecca Mason and Grace Wells ran a 4:15.37 to finish third, and the 800 relay team of Jessie Ingham, Macie Callan, Ashley Mason and Rebecca Mason was fourth in 1:51.94.

Sierra Lutheran wins titles

YERINGTON — The Falcons won the boys (227 points) and girls (225) titles at Saturday’s Division IV track finals.

The girls were led by Elaina Marchnegger, who won the 800 (2:31.99), 1600 (5:41.09) and 3200 (12:51.05). She also ran the anchor leg on the 3200 relay team. Alyssa Rowe won the shot put (33-2) and was fourth in the discus (92-0), and Abby Ferenz won the high jump (5-0) and Grace Bonafede took the triple jump at 33-0 1/4 and was fourth in the long jump (14-8 1/4). Kristy Missamore won the discus (110-2) and was third in the shot (31-7).

On the boys side, Jack Rodriguez won the 200 (23.99) and the 400 (52.86) and Ricky McNeely won the 1600 (4:56.10) and the 3200 (10:47.61). Rodriguez was part of the winning 1600 relay team. McNeely ran a leg on the 3200 relay squad. Zach Ferenz had seconds in the shot put (41-10 1/4) and the discus (127-10).

Virginia City’s Price Poston won the 110 hurdles (16.40) and was second in the long jump (20-8).

SWIMMING

Carson sends 4 to state

Four Carson High swimmers — Dagen Kipling, Brett Kolb, Reece Canfield and Matthew Hill — have qualified for next week’s state meet at UNLV.

Kipling won the 200 IM in 1:55,77 and finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.00). Reece Canfield was third in the 100 fly (56.99) and Brett Kolb was third in the 500 free (5:02.81).

The Senators qualified two relay teams, the 200 free and 400 free, for next week’s meet. Canfield, Kolb, Hill and Kipling finished second in the 400 free (3:25.55) and third in the 200 free (1:33.14).

The CHS girls were shut out of state. Nicole Geel came the closest, finishing fourth in the 100 free (56.54) and sixth in the 100 back (1:01.94).

Douglas won both the boys and girls team titles. Carson was third in the boys standings and sixth in the girls.

SOFTBALL

Tigers finish third in region

Douglas finished third in the Northern Division I Region Tournament Saturday after a 7-4 loss against Spanish Springs in Reno.

Douglas (21-15) rebounded from a loss on Thursday to McQueen — 7-1 in 11 innings — and won three straight games before being eliminated by Spanish Springs. Saturday’s game was the eighth in six days for the Tigers.

Spanish Springs scored five runs in the first inning to take a lead it never relinquished. The Tigers answered with three runs in the top of the second, but never got any closer than two runs.

Mackenzie Brixey’s RBI single in the third inning brought Douglas back to within 6-4.

Rylee Retzer hit 2-for-3 with a double, triple and three RBI to lead the Cougars offensively.

Hayley Fein pitched a complete game five-hitter to earn credit for the win.

Reed secured its fourth straight region championship later in the day with a 6-0 victory over Spanish Springs. Reed’s Julia Jensen pitched four straight shutout victories.
