Local affairs. A party of some 50 Chinese men passed through here en route for Montana. Eastward the course of (Celestial) empire takes its way. Stowe’s Hotel at Steamboat Springs Hotel was set on fire by some unknown incendiary. It is totally destroyed.

All sorts. Senator Conkling seems to have found a way to get rid of old debts. He pays them.

The Nevada State Highway department held a meeting at the Carson Hot Springs. They included Lillian Koskella, Myrtle Reppert, Vernita Hellwinkel, Mary Rochon, Phyllis Miller, Josephine Pagni, Clara Evans, Thelma Riehl, Barbara Malik, Katherine Dunfield and Alice Quinlan, Margaret Tobin, Stella Rosaschi.

Celebrating 100 Years. The Leisure Hour Club will celebrate 100 years of gathering for the purpose of knowledge and self-education according to former President Everett Randall. The club began April 6, 1896 with the premier agenda that listed discussions and critiques of the works of poet Robert Browning. The club will honor their centennial celebration on May 15, the traditional date of their “Merry Making” holiday.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
