Nevada Appeal at 150: Oct. 8, 1963: UNR radio station begins operation

The University of Nevada’s new FM radio station, KUNR, began broadcasting on Oct. 7 at 3:45 p.m.

Regular broadcasting hours will be 3:45 to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday.

FM receiver owners within a 13-mile radius of the university will be able to pick up the station at 88.1 on their dial.

KUNR headquarters are in the Church Fine Arts building at the north end of the campus. The station’s main studio is in the building, and the transmitter is located on the roof of the three-story structure.

In the initial weeks of operation, the KUNR program schedule will be filled with tastefully sleeted music ranging from folk to classical. Songs will be introduced by five student announcers.

Future plans for the new station include broadcasts of campus musical events, and addresses by visiting speakers. Tapes of these presentations may be made available after broadcast as a community public service.

This continues the Appeal’s review of news stories and headlines during its Sesquicentennial year.
