Community Spotlight: Carson City Wolfpack wins Davis Legacy tournament

The Carson FC Wolfpack U17 girls won the U19 division of the Davis Legacy Showcase recently.

Despite missing several players, Carson compiled a 4-0-1 record.

Carson knocked off Slammers FC, 3-2, in the finals. The Wolfpack led 2-1 in the second half on goals by Alondra Mata and Eva Swearngin, but the Slammers sent the game into overtime on a penalty kick with three minutes left in regulation. Mak Yarnell-Williams scored in OT for the victory.

In the semifinals, the Wolfpack edged the California Rush, 2-1, The Wolfpack trailed 1-0, but a PK by Angie Hurtado and a score by Yanitzia Perez after a Hurtado steal was enough to get the locals into the finals.

In pool play, Carson opened with a scoreless tie against the Slammers, as keeper Gabby Nickel made several key stops, including a penalty kick.

Carson edged FC Sporting 99, 1-0, on a 30-yard shot by Swearngin.

In a 2-1 win over American River FC, Rachel Henley scored off a Valerie Sue Meyer assist and then Perez scored off a Swearngin assist for a 2-0 lead. The Rush scored late in the first half, but couldn’t crack the Wolfpack defense in the final half.

The Pack is ranked No. 1 in the state and 60th in the nation, according to Nation by Got Sport.

Thorson wins Midget Series race in SoCal

TORRANCE, Calif. – Minden’s Tanner Thorson took the lead on lap 10 and then rebuffed Austin Brown down the stretch to win the Belle-Clair Speedway’s 25th annual Knepper Memorial in POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series action Friday night.

The victory was Thorson’s sixth win of the season and ninth overall. He continues to lead the POWRi point standings. The 20-year-old Thorson also sits in the No. 1 spot of the National Midget Driver of the Year standings.

“That was pretty tricky,” said Thorson. “I had no idea; I assume that Austin was running the top up there and my guys told me to get up there under the yellow. I’m beat right now. I’ve been holding my breath since the two yellows to go. I just can’t thank these Keith Kunz Toyota guys enough.”

Streeter wins net title at Dayton

Kathy Streeter shot a net 65 to win low net over the field at the recent Dayton Valley Women’s Golf Club President’s Cup tournament. Carol Colwell was low gross over the field with an 84.

In flight 1, Denise Johnson won low gross with an 87 and Jona Kremp was low net with an 80. Stevie Walton was low gross with a 91 and Beth Juri was low net with a 67. Maggie Abbett was low gross with 100 in Flight 3 and Carol Merchant was low net with a 69. Shirley Mercer won low gross in Flight 4 with a 109 and Margaret Christiansen was low net with a 76.

Ness foursome wins Empire senior event

Mel Ness, Richard Torok, Fred Coons and Pat Coons shot a 49 to win Flight A at the Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club tournament held at Dayton Valley. The format was a four-man scramble. Henry Teague, Gene Gaston, Marshall McCurdy and Wes Franklin were second with a 51.

Jim Green, John Lewis, John Masiello and Nick Paul won Flight B via tiebreaker with a 48 over John Sullivan, George Allison, Norm Scoggin and blind bogey.

Dennis Joseph, Ivan Lepire, Bob Pemberton and Tom Welton were closest to the hole winners.

Clinics set for Carson Valley

Carson Valley Golf Club is hosting a new Couples Clinic and a Ladies Clinic on Tuesdays.

The couples event is every Tuesday at 4:15. The cost is $20 per couple for the 50-minute class. All level of players are invited. The ladies get together is at 5:15. The cost is $10 per player.

Mello group wins at Toiyabe GC

David Mello, Emmanuel Ramiro, William Pereda and Randy Plymell combined for a net 121 to win the Toiyabe Golf Club’s Men’s Day tournament on July 15.

There was a two-way tie for second at 124. Raymond Badger, Charles Cockerill and Tom Hamman were on one team, and Guntis Sietins, Rob Jennings-Teat, Jim Copple and Larry Goodnight were on the other. Chuck Griffin, Steve Graham, Bill Eng and Mike Dyer were fourth at 125.

Lynn Greenman shot a gross 44 to win the Toiyabe Golf Club’s Ladies Day tournament. The format was Par-3s and Par-5s.

Jackie Cheney won low net with 37 followed by Joyce Powell at 38. Barbara Plymell and Kathy Cockerill tied with 39s.

Patterson, Prause tie at CVGC

Dennis Patterson and Marc Prause tied for first place in Flight A at the recent Carson Valley Golf Club men’s tournament. Both players shot a net 71.

Bob Pemberton was third in Flight A with a 72. In Flight B, David Morris and Jim Pillsbury tied for the top spot with a 72, while Fred Coons, Jim Arens and Ron Fukuyama tied for second with 73s.

Bruce Sanford and John Carey tied for the top spot in Flight C with a 63, while Gary Carston was third with a 65.
