Capitol doesn’t see ‘Day of Rage’ protest

The Internet based, anonymous sourced advertisement promoting the Nevada State Capitol grounds as a location for a “Day of Rage” protest failed to attract any protesters. The event was set to take place at 4 p.m. on the Capitol Complex and Carson City was the only designated Nevada location for the protest.

In response to the notice, approximately 9 local law enforcement agencies joined together to ensure the public, property, and downtown businesses, as well as the Nevada State Capital and Legislature, were adequately protected from any violence. While officers were pre-positioned in the area, none were dispatched to any activities.

Throughout the week, the Sheriff’s Office received numerous tips and warnings of this pending protest that advocated “civil disobedience.” Public expressions of concern were received from as far away as Las Vegas and southern California, most noting the horrific shooting that took place in Dallas. Each was appreciated. While area law enforcement agencies determined a large protest was not likely, fears expressed by residents, businesses, and government agencies created a significant concern. The attention created by the Internet notice was sufficient to cause the Sheriff’s Office and Capitol Police to bring in adequate resources to address any unexpected circumstance that may have surfaced.

This is the second year in a row the “Day of Rage” internet based threat has been received. Neither year produced any activity in Carson City.
