List to the sound of jubilant bells,

Pealing their merriest notes;

On the vibrating air the melody swells,

Proudly, triumphantly, laughingly wells

Cheerily, joyfully floats —

While, from a myriad throats,

Borne on the mightily breeze, resounding and clear

130 Years Ago

All sorts. The last few days have been the coldest of the season. The wife of city trustee Kennedy presented him with a girl on the last day of the year. The box factory has closed down with large orders on hand because of a lack of seasoned lumber.

110 YEARS AGO

New Year wedding. The first day of 1906 witnessed the wedding of Dr. W. H. Cavell and Miss Ida Platt. It was one of the social events in the history of this city. The Masonic Hall was used, and Rev. H. H. Ramsey of the Episcopal Church performed the wedding ceremony. The bride is one of the best known and popular young ladies of this city and has taken a leading part in Eastern Star work. The groom, Dr. Cavell, has an established practice here and plans to make Carson City their home.

80 Years Ago

“Carson Theatre — ‘The Dark Angel’ — with Fredrick March, Merle Oberon, Herbert Marshall. Everybody will feel the exquisite thrill, the enchanting spell that this picture casts over romance (Samuel Goldwyn)!”

50 Years Ago

Leisure Hour Club. The regular meeting will be held at the Leisure Hour Club House on West Musser at Division Street. Miss Suzanne Whitcomb, a local voice teacher and elementary school music teacher, will be performing. She is a graduate of the Boston Conservatory.

20 Years Ago

Road closure. Six Mile Canyon Road in Storey County closed after flooding caused it to collapse in six places. It is a major route for Dayton residents who commute to Reno and for Virginia City residence who shop at Smith’s in Dayton.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
