Good news: We received the following brief but gratifying note yesterday: H.R. Mighels — Dear Sir: Called to see you. Respects. Don’t take a drink. Jno. Collins, R.H. Taylor. We are glad to be so reassured of Col. Bob’s adherence to his good resolutions. And we are not less pleased to know that Mr. Collins, too, “don’t take a drink.” One must have his dry joke ye know!

Woven Chinese hats are becoming quite fashionable in Carson among the ladies, by turning the big end up on three legs and using as a work basket. The instant the Chinese saw the demand for them they promptly raised the price.

From now until Christmas the Gray, Reid, Wright company, Carson’s Big Store, will remain open evenings in order that those who desire may do their shopping after the business worries of the day are over. Do your shopping early while the selection is at its best.

70 years ago

Appointment of Col. Harold S. Johnson, CAC, ground troop instructor for the proposed Nevada national guard, was announced today. Col. Johnson has the job of organizing the 421st anti-aircraft battalion of the state’s planned postwar guard. It has been estimated that 515 officers and enlisted men will bring the planned guard up to full strength.

Northern Nevada builders are predicting an increase in new home construction next year with a 3 to 5 percent increase in cost.
