Problem bear drowns in Dayton pond after shot with tranquilizer

A black bear drowned after it was tranquilized by Nevada wildlife officials then ran into a pond near a golf course in Dayton.

Nevada Department of Wildlife spokesman Chris Healy says the 300-pound male bear was wandering Monday evening through the Dayton Valley Golf Club.

Wildlife officials and Lyon County sheriff’s deputies decided to tranquilize the bear because of its close proximity to people in the area.

Healy said when the bear was hit by the dart, it ran through some yards and into the pond, where it started to swim before slipping beneath the surface.

Attempts to rescue the animal were unsuccessful. Its body was recovered Tuesday.

Healy said the bear had been captured previously in Incline Village and Gardnerville.
