Prep roundup: Carson boys soccer rolls to another win

Carson High’s shutout streak came to end Wednesday night, but the Senators still cruised to their sixth consecutive boys soccer victory.

Abel Sanchez scored twice, while Peter Garrett, Guillermo Hernandez, Rogelio Herrera and Osvaldo Gomez added a goal each to a 6-2 win over McQueen at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

Carson completed the crossover portion of its schedule with a 6-0 record. The Senators open Sierra League play Saturday at 1 p.m. at home against Damonte Ranch.

The Senators, who had registered five straight shutouts, gave up their first goal of the season 17 seconds into the match when Willy De La Torre dribbled through the Carson defense and beat CHS keeper Efren Ramirez to give the Lancers their only lead of the match.

“That first goal, all I can say is that we were just ball watching,” Carson coach Mike Alvarez said. “It was like we just let the guy take the ball in and shoot. I think half the team was in shock. They talked about getting the score back and we did that immediately.”

“I felt like we weren’t ready to play,” defender Garrett said. “We were too confident. We didn’t stand the guy (De La Torre) up.”

Carson evened the score 40 seconds later, and dominated the rest of the way, outshooting the Lancers 9-3.

Herrera took a through ball down the right hashmark and fired one past Lancer goalie Andrew Palmer, tying the match at 1 less than a minute into the match.

McQueen’s Alex Anderson hit the right upright in the 18th minute, and a minute later Sanchez drilled one home from 25 yards out to give CHS a 2-1 lead.

Eleven minutes later, Garrett scored on a header off a corner kick by Guillermo Perez to make it 3-1. It was Garrett’s first goal of the season.

“Yes it does (feel good),” Garrett said. “Usually the coaches are telling me to come in from the back.”

The Senators scored on their first two shots of the second half, as Sanchez scored in the 45th minute and Gomez scored in the 49th minute to make it 5-1.

Carson continued to pepper the goal. Herrera hit the crossbar and Hernandez was turned away in the 61st minute. Hernandez did score five minutes later to make it 6-1.

Cedric Jones scored on a direct kick against reserve goalie Voictor Guarded, who had entered the game in the 50th minute.

“That last goal of theirs was a good shot,” Alvarez said. “You would be hard pressed to find anybody who was going to stop that.”

Carson will be looking for its seventh straight win on Saturday.

“I don’t know much about Damonte,” Alvarez said. “They are having a rough year like McQueen. Hopefully it will go well for us. I hope our defense will be better prepared at the outset of the game.”

JV: Carson got scores from five different players — Adrian Torres, Angel Gonzalez, Brandon Sevilla, Isael Lopez and Raul Lopez — in an easy 5-2 win over McQueen.

Douglas boys falls

Douglas (6-3-2, 2-2-2) fell to Hug 4-1. Flavi Lopez scored in the second half to pull the Tigers to within 2-1.

S. Tahoe tops Dayton boys

DAYTON — The Vikings scored twice in the first half en route to a 3-1 Division 1A boys win.

Jaime Avila scored on a nice cross from Jacob Duran to make it 2-1. The Vikings scored their final goal in the last minute of the game.

Defenders Jonathan Torres, Carlos Landa and Marco Torres stood out, as well as midfielders Duran and Victor Gomez, according to Dayton coach Luis Melgarejo.

“Every game we get compliments from the other coaches or the referees on how much of a different team we are this year,” Melgarejo said. “This is the best Dayton has looked in a long time. The last two years I’ve assisted, we lost games really bad to Tahoe around 10-0...6-0, so it is a big improvement and I’m proud of the hard work my team is putting in.”

DAYTON — Dayton trailed 1-0 at halftime before falling 3-0 to South Tahoe.

Beglin shoots 92

RENO — Jill Beglin shot a 92 to lead Carson in a league tournament at Arrowcreek, but the Senators were unable to post a score because they had only three scoring players. Carson is now tied for the fourth and final qualifying spot for regionals and it needs to score well next week a Sierra Sage to solidify a playoff spot.

Manogue won on Wednesday with a 385 and was followed by Galena (413), Wooster (425), Douglas (442) and Damonte (506). Camryn Aten turned her ankle on the back nine and was unable to post a score for Carson.

Carson coach Wade Greenlee said Aten was on her way to posting a score in the 100-range which would have put his team in contention for third. “The girls were grinding all day on a very difficult course,” Greenlee said. “All the girls left some shots out there, but I’m very proud of them. It was a long, hot day for them.”

Angelika Morrison shot a 110 and Elise Mclaren fired a 131 for Carson.

TENNIS

Douglas rolls past Reed

SPARKS — Led by Madelyn Landerfelt and the doubles tandem of Kaitlyn Smith and Terra Williams, the Tigers rolled to an easy 15-3 win over Reed Tuesday afternoon.

Landerfelt went 3-0 as did the Tigers’ doubles tandem. Douglas’ two other doubles teams, Tara Cottrill and Kylie Coziahr, and Anne Pomroy and Kayleigh Carlson each went 2-0 on the day. Kari Cozihar went 2-1 in singles.

VOLLEYBALL

Yerington sweeps

Kassidy Lommori had five aces, Ashley Rife had 12 assists and Rachel Dane added 11 assists as Yerington (17-4, 3-0) swept Silver Stage 25-7, 25-9, 25-15.

Tigers lose in 5

MINDEN — Douglas dropped its second crossover match of the season, losing a dramatic five-setter to visiting Spanish Springs Tuesday night.

With the match tied at 2, the Cougars pulled out a 15-12 victory. The Cougars, who were down 2-1, bounced back by winning 25-17 and 15-12 in final two sets,

Spanish Springs improved to 13-9, 3-3 in the DI North. Douglas fell to 9-5, 3-2.

Spanish Springs had 22 aces as a team. Taryn Allmet led Douglas with 16 kills and Aubrey Caires added 11. Talon Jackson contributed six kills and 12 digs.
