Aug. 29, 1966: Carson College welcomes first students

Carson College welcomed its first students this morning at the temporary campus at 1931 California St., Industrial Park, south of Carson City.

There was a general assembly at 9 a.m., with a welcoming address given by Dr. Edwin H. Richardson, college president.

Hobert Sturm, dean of the college and Tom Miller, registrar, also gave brief speeches. This was followed by a coffee break for faculty and students, after which the students consulted with their advisors to fill out their fall schedule of classes. Still pending is the licensing of the college by the State Board of Education. A decision is expected tomorrow from the board.

Meanwhile, however, Dr. Richardson has received a very encouraging and cordial letter from Charles Armstrong, president of Nevada State University at Reno. The letter follows:

Dear President Richardson:

I very much enjoyed visiting with you and Mrs. Richardson in my office recently and I am pleased to note the amount of progress which you have already made in the development of Carson College.

I understand that Carson College will formally open for the first time on Sept. 1 next, and on behalf of the University of Nevada I send you and your colleagues every good wish for success in the bold new venture which you are undertaking.

The University of Nevada is most pleased to welcome Carson College as a new colleague in the challenging task of higher education for Nevada and we look forward to fruitful cooperation with you in the pursuit of our common concern.
