Nevada is paying $285,000 to hire a famous lawyer to help defend the state’s new Education Savings Account program in two pending lawsuits.
The Nevada Board of Examiners voted Tuesday to approve the agreement with Bancroft PLLC, the law firm of former U.S. Solicitor General Paul Clement.
Clement has argued more cases before the U.S. Supreme Court since 2000 than any other lawyer.
Nick Trutanich of the Nevada Attorney General’s Office testified that the law firm invested 500 hours so far defending the school choice program, which would normally cost $375,000.
Gov. Brian Sandoval said the briefs Bancroft filed urging the court to dismiss the legal challenges are among the best he’s ever seen.
The $285,000 contract will also cover all additional legal work Bancroft does at the district court level.
