A Nevada legislative committee has approved a bill that would require local governments to disclose details about proposed contracts with unions days before the agreements came up for a vote.
The Senate Government Affairs Committee approved SB158 on Friday.
The bill originally required details of the contracts 10 days before a vote, but the committee adopted an amendment that would change the timeframe to three days. That aligns with requirements that public meeting agendas be released three days in advance.
Republican Sen. Pete Goicoechea said the rule would allow time for the public to review the contract and voice their opinions, which could persuade elected officials to vote against the agreement.
Union representatives said they support transparency, but want similar notification rules for contracts even they involved non-union employees.
