Dayton hoops teams swept at South Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The Dayton boys and girls basketball teams were swept in a Div. I-A Northern League doubleheader at South Tahoe on Tuesday night. The losses kept each Dust Devils team winless in league play after three games.

In the opener, the Dayton girls team (3-10, 0-3 I-A Northern) fell to the Vikings 45-40. South Tahoe (2-4, 2-0) didn’t trail after closing out the first half on a 10-0 run to take a 24-20 lead into the break, and were able to close out a second straight league win after halftime.

With 6:43 left in the fourth quarter, Dayton pulled to within 39-36 after Angela Sikora made a 3-pointer as part of a game-high 22 points. But Vikings guard Meagan Perez answered with a trey on the next possession, and the hosts were able to hold off the Dust Devils the rest of the way.

Elora Neep finished with 10 points for the Dust Devils and Kristina Mason added eight. Bailey Barcellos led South Tahoe with 12 points, Drue Chapman scored nine and Annie Buchser finished with eight.

In the second game, the Dust Devils boys team (3-8, 0-3) couldn’t slow South Tahoe in a 73-34 defeat. Dayton trailed 24-12 at halftime after playing with a deliberate pace in the first two quarters — South Tahoe (3-5, 1-1) opened the second half on a 19-5 run to roll to its first league win of the season.

Dayton played slow from the outset, and put its first points on the board with 1:18 left in the quarter — a layup from Jonathan Ply that made it 9-2. The Vikings led 12-2 after the first quarter and had a 12-point lead at halftime after a first half where the Dust Devils controlled tempo. In the second half, South Tahoe turned up the pressure and pace to run away from Dayton. The Vikings led 47-23 after the third quarter and opened the final frame on a 17-4 run to hand the Dust Devils a lopsided loss.

Josh Riders led Dayton with 14 points in the loss, and Ply added eight. For South Tahoe, Blake Blocker scored 14 points and Ethan Strain finished with 12 — Blocker transferred from Dayton to STHS prior to the start of the school year.
