Both teams win titles in their own invitational

Carson High’s boys and girls enjoyed big days en route to winning their respective titles at the Carson Invitational Saturday at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

The Carson boys fnished with 136 points, 25 ahead of second-place Dayton and 50 ahead of third-place Hug. The Carson girls finished with 144.5, 18 ahead of Spanish Springs. Galena was third with 79 and Dayton was sixth with 46.

Asa Carter set a school record with a 44-9 mark in the triple jump, and the quartet of Athena Favero, Sahara Winder, Maddie Preston and ValerieSue Meyer set a mark in the 800 relay with a 1:44.3.

“It was a good day for us,” coach Robert Maw said. “The kids performed really well.”

Corey Reid won the 200 (22.20), was second in the 110 hurdles (15.28), ran a leg on the winning 800 relay team and was third in the pole vault at 12-6. Carter ran a leg on the 800 relay team (1:30.85) and was third in the long jump at 20-2 1/2. Hector Gomez-Barrios was second in the 400 (52.85) and also ran on the winning 800 relay team along with Connor Leahy. The 1600 relay team of Jon Barahona, Jesus Rodriguez, Caulin Bartley and Brandon Basa took third in 3:37.82, and the 3200 relay team of Wyatt Cartier, Michael Mendoza, Adam Flaten and Michael Leiken took third in 9:01.08. Cartier, Barrios, Mendoza and Leiken won the distance medley in 11:54.53. Ian Schulz won the discus (160-10) and was third in the shot (46-11). Josue Orozco was fourth in the discus at 131-6. Greg Wallace was fourth in the high jump at 6-feet.

The Dayton boys were led by Dallon Mendoza, who won the 400 (51.29), Tobias Tapley, who was second in the 100 (11.63), and Zach Hawley, who won the shot (55-5 3/4) and was second in the discus (148-5). Benji Ply was third in the hurdles (15.66), ran a leg on Dayton’s first-place 1600 relay team (3:28.91) along with Tapley, Mendoza and Skyler Berntson, won the high jump (6-2) and was second in the pole vault (14-feet). Jon Ply was second in the high jump (6-0), fourth in the pole vault (12-6) and fifth in the 110 hurdles (16.24).

On the girls side, Madison Preston had marks of 17-feet in the long jump and 36-2 1/4 in the triple jump to win both events for Carson. She was second in the high jump at 5-feet. Palotas was fourth in the long jump at 15-9 1/2 and second in the triple jump at 34-2 3/4. Meyer was second in the 400 (60.23), a personal best this year, and fourth in the 200 (27.09). Eveline Delgado won the 3200 (12:40.34). The 1600 relay team of Jessie Balkwell, Katelyn Morse, Abby Paulson and Lauren Hudak won in 4:28.58 an d the 400 relay team of Favero, Winder, Meyer and Josephine Veneziano placed second in 51.02. The quartet of Balkwell, Hudak, Delgado and Jiavanna Wongfonnato was third in the 3200 relay.

Dayton was led by Kaylee Turner, who was third in the shot (37-0 3/4) and third in the discus (120-0). Zaria Landis was third in the 800 (2:34.43) and third in the 1600 (5:44.87).

A lost day at Fallon

FALLON — Fallon continued its run trough Northern 1A baseball teams with a doubleheader sweep of Dayton, 9-4 and 11-1

The Dust Devils led twice on the day, both times coming in the first inning of each game, and after that it was all Fallon.

“Fallon is really loaded,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said. “They have more baseball players than we did football players. We have seven games left, and we’re not going to mail it in. We just have to stay the course and work hard. Hopefully it will translate into some wins down the line.

“In the first game we scored three and they answered back with five. We never got anything going until the fifth when we left the bases loaded. We couldn’t string hits together.”

Trevor Burrows, Davis Winebarger and Mikey Selmi drove in runs with singles in the opener. Selmi drove in Dayton’s lone run in the second game.

Selmi had four hits on the day and Dylan Baker had two, both in the first game.

Dayton swept by Greenwave

FALLON — Fallon took three straight over Dayton this weekend, winning 18-2 on Friday, and 20-0 and 19-0 on Saturday.

Mallory Dickenson tripled in the opener on Friday.

Galena sweeps Senators

RENO — The Grizzlies swept Carson, 7-3 and 12-2 Saturday in a Northern Division I doubleheader.

Errors hurt Carson in the opener, as the Grizzlies scored three unearned runs off starter/loser Lauren Lemburg.

Bailey Allen led Carson with three hits and Nicole Brown tripled.

“We gave them three in the first inning (of the first game),” CHS coach Shane Quilling said. “We hit the ball well. I think we only struck out a couple of times. Lauren pitched well. Galena hit the ball a little better than us.”

In the second game, Galena scored five in the first and seven in the second off Makenzie Tucker, who was the victim of poor defense.

“We dropped three flyballs,” said Quilling in talking about the second-game demise. “Makenzie pitched well and deserved better.”

Carson plays at McQueen Thursday and hosts Spanish Springs on Saturday.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Hopkins sparks Pack to win

RENO – Senior Karley Hopkins went 3-for-4 with a career-high five RBI, and senior Megan Dortch tossed five innings of relief to earn the win as the Nevada softball team topped in-state foe UNLV, 10-5, on Saturday afternoon at Hixon Field.

Junior Amanda Weis drove two runs, senior Ashley Butera hit her fifth home run of the season and freshman Alyssa Mendez and junior Jasmine Jenkins each tallied three hits for the Pack (14-29, 4-10 MW).

The rubber-match of the three-game series is set for noon today at Hixson Park.
