Big day for Carson swimmers; softball drops 2

Carson High’s boys swim team knocked off both Reed and Reno in the season-opening meet at the Carson Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon.

The boys beat Reed 181-102 and then stunned perennial powerhouse Reno, 135-131. The Carson girls knocked of Reed 187-98 and Reno 202-59.

Carson won the last race of the day, the 400 free relay, to grab the upset win against Reno. The team of Tallon Rauch, Drew Briggeman, Casey Garrett and Dagen Kipling swam a 3:37.65 compared to a 3:42.59 by Reno.

Kipling won two events — 200 IM (2:07.05) and 100 breast (1:05.41). Briggeman was second in the 200 free (2:10.71) and third in the 100 free (56.68). Rauch was second in the 100 fly (58.61) and second in the 100 back (58.85). Josh Breen was third in the 200 free (2:24.8) and Garrett was third in the 100 fly (1:04.93). Bryan Remick was third in the 500 free (6:50.60). Peter Grarrett was third in the 100 breast (1:13.58).

Carson was second in the 200 medley relay and second in the 200 free relay.

The girls were led by Kalysta Branco and Kelsey Bradley.

Branco won the 200 free (2:11.95) and took second in the 500 free (5:57.26). Bradley was second in the 50 free (28.5) and second in the 100 fly (1:11.80).

Nora Streng was second in the 100 back (1:10.10), while Michelle Harrison was second in the 100 free (1:08.36). Christy Krahn was second in the 200 IM (2:30.50) and third in the 100 breast (1:19.73). Stella Carroll was third in the 100 back (1:14.79) and third in the 200 free (2:20.0). Rachel Rombardo was third in the 100 free (1:25.66). Vanessa Rauch was third in the 500 free (5:58.58).

Carson won the 200 and 400 free relay events and placed second in the 200 medley relay.

Carson swept in Sac

SACRAMENTO — Carson concluded the Elk Grove Preseason Tournament with losses to Sutter (6-2) and Oakmont (11-4) Saturday at the Sacramento Softball Complex.

Carson finished the tourney 0-4-1. The Senators open their Division I season at home Tuesday at 3:45 against North Valleys.

Sutter took a 1-0 lead in the third, and then scored three in the sixth and two in the seventh. Carson scored its only two runs of the game in on a two-run homer by Jennifer Purcell, her second homer in as many games.

Carson managed just three hits, two by Bailey Allen and one by Purcell.

Against Oakmont, Aubrey Northrup’s homer gave the Senators their only lead of the game, 1-0 in the second. Oakmont struck for three in the second and eight in the sixth to win easily. Carson made Oakmont’s job easier, making eight errors which led to eight unearned runs.

Purcell and Breuer led the offense with two hits apiece, while Northrup, Michelle Perry and Malia Tiffer had a hit apiece.

Dayton wins twice, now 4-0

YERINGTON — Dayton improved to 4-0 on the season with wins over Tonopah (18-0) and Battle Mountain (9-0) on Saturday at the Yerington Tournament.

Both games were called after three innings because of the run rule, according to coach Gerald Vasquez.

Against Tonopah, Makayla Shadle (1 inning) and Mallory Dickenson (2 innings) combined for the win.

Shadle went 3-for-3, all triples and drove in four runs. Shalie Powell went 2-for-2 with a homer as did Kalee Alexander.

Against Battle Mountain, Shadle struck out seven in three innings.

Serina Cazel went 3-for-3 and Mallory Dickenson went 2-for-2.
