Donations sought for Elks fundraising sale

Tahoe/Douglas Elks Lodge,1227 Kimmerling Road in the Gardnerville Ranchos, accepts donations from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays until Sept. 1 for its annual flea market fundraiser.

Only clean items that work and are of good quality will be accepted. Cathode ray tube TVs will not be accepted.

Boy Scout Troop 33 sets summer events

Boy Scout Troop 33 of Carson Valley invites its alumni scouts and adult leaders to its 75th anniversary potluck picnic celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 20 in Lampe Park in Gardnerville.

The troop will provide hamburgers and hot dogs. There will be games, stories and a sing-a-long. To RSVP, contact Kim Kruse at kenkimkruse@charter.net or 775-783-9699 by July 8.

Entries for the troop’s Send a Scout to Camp car and truck show fundraiser are due by July 12.

The event offers food by Carson City Rotary, an auction, music, vendors and displays of custom cars and a Bonneville race car. Each participant will receive a T-shirt, meal and plaque.

An awards ceremony will be at 3 p.m. Voting will be will be people’s choice — first through fifth place in both trucks and cars. Other awards include largest car or truck, participant who traveled the furthest and scouts’ choice in each category. Early registration costs $40; late registration costs $50.

Non-food vendors are sought for the event. Ten-by-ten-feet spaces are available for $25 each. All proceeds help members participate in Boy Scouts activities, which help the scouts earn merit badges, achieve rank advancements and purchase uniforms and equipment.

Community yard sales benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters

The classified site, Frauc.com, has launched an inaugural community yard sale event that will be offered around Northern Nevada through the summer. The event is a four-city stop, offering a specific day of yard sales in Carson City on July 19, Gardnerville on July 26, Sparks on July 26, and Reno on Aug. 9.

To host, register for $12 at FraucCityWide.com, where submissions include address, an image of the house and description of items to be sold. Shoppers can pull the list and map of each location for free.

Each event benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada; $10 per registration goes to the nonprofit. The remaining $2 goes to the printing of yard sale signs. Drop off spots for Reno and Sparks will also be designated for each city, where remaining unsold items may be donated to the nonprofit.

Natives & Newcomers meeting is July 10

Brenda Mothershead of the Department of Aging and Disability will talk about elder abuse at the next Carson City Natives & Newcomers meeting at 11:15 a.m. July 10 at Grandma Hattie’s Restaurant, 2811 S. Carson St. The presentation and lunch will be followed by a short business meeting.

Natives & Newcomers supports scholarships to Western Nevada College nursing students and Carson High School students. It supports local charities and provides braille playing cards to the visually impaired.

Carson Valley Desert Brushes meets July 10

Attendees of Carson Valley Desert Brushes’ meeting at 10 a.m. July 10 at the Johnson Lane Firehouse, 1400 Stephanie Way in Minden, will paint toy cradles for a Christmas charity project.

Painters of all levels, and those who would like to learn to paint, are welcome.

Centennial celebration of Nevada battleship set

A ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the battleship USS Nevada commissioning in Carson City will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon July 11 at the Capitol Building.

Officials will re-dedicate a plaque at the USS Nevada Memorial. A reception will follow in the Old Assembly Chambers in the Nevada State Capitol.

Registration opens for charity golf tournament

Thunder Canyon Ladies Golf Club will hold its charity golf tournament to benefit the Food Bank of Northern Nevada on July 20. Registration, breakfast and raffle ticket sales will begin at 7:30 a.m.; the tournament will start at 9 a.m.

The four person team scramble tournament includes a continental breakfast, golf cart and tournament play, driving range access and lunch after the tournament.

Fernley Republican Women meet July 15

Sherry Dilley and Alice Clark, leaders of the Nevada Federation of Republican Women, will be featured at Fernley Republican Women’s meeting at 6:30 p.m. July 15 at Fernley High School Library, 1300 Highway 95A. Attendees are encouraged to arrive at 6 p.m. for snacks and socialization.

Sherry Dilley, NvFRW parliamentarian, will talk about new project titled WOMEN = RESULTS, providing education on increasing membership and getting women elected to political office.

Alice Clark, NvFRW leadership chair, will talk about the differences between Democratic and Republican philosophies using examples from current news issues along with excerpts from Charles Krauthammer’s book, “Things That Matter.”

Donations are also encouraged for Fernley Republican Women’s Caring for America/Adopt-a-Soldier program, which collects non-perishable foods for the Fernley Food Bank, along with donations of funds and care items for soldiers. Items sought for soldiers include: single serving food and personal care items and cards and letters from home. Silver Dollar Car Classic Sock Hop set

High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s monthly dance party will be the Silver Dollar Car Classic Sock Hop from 6 to 10 p.m. July 26 in Carson Nugget’s Grand Ballroom, 507 N. Carson St.

Vintage 1950s and 60s dance music will be played; costumes of that era are encouraged. The fun includes dance, hula hoop, costume and limbo contests with door prizes.

The cost is $5 for car show participants, $7 for members of HSSDC and Reno’s Biggest Little Swing Dance Club, $10 general for individuals and $15 for couples.
